Bob Smith (Robert Smith & Associates of Medina, OH, smith_at_apk.net)
visited our library and reviewed our Technical Services structure,
workflow, etc. last June. Although I was hesitant at first to have him
come, he was very thorough in interviewing staff at all levels and
talked to PS staff too. He asked me hard questions and really made me
think about whether or not we were doing things in the most efficient
way possible (which we weren't!).
He did a great job of asking us to look at our workflow and procedures
and ask ourselves "Why are we doing this?" Many of his recommendations
of changes were in line with what I heard at the recent ALA Midwinter
conference, which was to outsource cataloging of mainstream stuff so you
can free up your staff and resources to work on rare and unique
collections (think digitization).
I think he could do a fine job with an academic library.
Good luck!

Has anyone recently worked with consultants to review/assess system

I'd appreciate any recommendations.
Thanks.
