I've had a suspicion that the Google Books Library project is leading to
something very much like that: the application of a sophisticated
algorithm to an entire library collection that will make every search
tool that came before it seem rudimentary. From the project home page:
"The Library Project's aim is simple: make it easier for people to find
relevant books..." ( http://books.google.com/googlebooks/library.html )
