Dear members of the list,

As you probably know, Topic Maps is an ISO standard (ISO 13250) for the
representation and interchange of knowledge that continues a tradition of
indexing or library languages, like indexes, taxonomies and thesauri. That
technology is being used in web portals and e-learning systems with great
success, because it makes possible a great level of association between the
topics or subjects you want to talk about, to model (create ontologies) very
easily, and to deal with very complex domains and kinds of information and
documents. Topic Maps can also represent the Dublin Core metadata schema and
make it richer and more flexible.

The use of this technology in libraries is starting to be considered by some
librarians, who are thinking about the possibility of implementing it in
library catalogs and/or library portals. There are already some experiences
with the latter (The Royal Library of Denmark for instance.
http://www.kb.dk/en/).

Some of these people interested in applying Topic Maps in libraries created
a mailing list to discuss and inform about new applications and advances in
this issues.

We invite you, librarians and information scientist, or anyone else
interested in this topic, to join the list and to share your ideas about
Topic Maps in LIS!
