... and I am half way through the same book! Much of the first phase of the
eXtensible Catalog Project (XC) was focused on this community building, and
I think our initial success is very heartening. In addition the "official"
XC partners that we have listed on our blog, we have been contacted by many,
many libraries who may not be able to commit resources to the project right
now but who are very supportive of what we're doing and would like to
participate at some point. I like to think that the XC Project is a start
at what Joe outlines in the second part of his message, where he envisions a
large number of libraries each devoting staff toward a larger collaborative
venture. Over the course of the next year, the XC Team will be studying
what makes an open source community successful (in addition to developing
and deploying the XC software) so that we can have the best possible chance
at long-term success - both for our project, and for other projects as well.
I will look forward to continuing this conversation!
