Rice University is seeking a dynamic, service-oriented
Catalog/Metadata Librarian who will provide leadership in evaluation
and application of current and emerging metadata standards.  The
successful candidate will also be responsible for original and
complex copy cataloging of library materials in book and non-book
formats, including visual materials and electronic resources.  The
position reports to the Head of Cataloging and Metadata Services in
the Technical Services Department.  Cataloging and Metadata Services
includes 7 exempt, 9 non-exempt, and 3 part-time temporary staff,
plus student workers.

Responsibilities:  Collaborates in a team environment to evaluate and
apply appropriate metadata schemas to provide description and access
for various digital projects of the Library and Rice University;
assists in development and ongoing review of local policies and
procedures for such applications; responsible for associated
authority & quality control; may act as liaison for metadata projects
with other departments within the library and/or other campus groups;
performs original cataloging and cataloging-related work for library
materials in book and non-book formats, coordinating development of
new policies and procedures for new types of material, including
consultation with affected public services staff; performs complex
copy cataloging and cataloging-related work for library materials,
particularly for materials having only vendor-level or other
minimal-level records; participates in departmental and library-wide
committees and work groups established to further various aspects of
the Fondren Library mission.

Requirements:  ALA-accredited Master of Library Science degree;
knowledge of Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, second edition, and
Library of Congress Rule Interpretations, Library of Congress Subject
Headings, Library of Congress classification, MARC 21 formats,
emerging standards such as RDA; one to three years of original
cataloging experience in an automated environment; experience
cataloging books and one or more non-book format; awareness of
national trends in cataloging, including developments at the Library
of Congress and Program for Cooperative Cataloging; experience with
one or more of these metadata schemas or tools: Dublin Core, EAD,
MODS, METS, OAI, VRACore, RDF, TEI, XML, and relevant thesauri or
ontologies, etc.; working knowledge of German; effective
communication skills; good planning and organizational skills;
ability to work without close supervision.

Preferred qualifications:  Two years of cataloging experience in the
automated technical services operation of an academic or other
research library; knowledge of two or more European languages;
knowledge of OCLC; familiarity with Sirsi; experience with DSpace.

Salary & benefits:  $42,500 minimum, with hiring salary commensurate
with experience and qualifications; no state or local income tax; 21
benefit days; 8 study days; a range of retirement options including
TIAA/CREF; health and life insurance; and tuition waiver.
