This reminds me of when someone asks me: "Do you believe in evolution?"
There's no good answer to that one, because it's just not a question of
BELIEF. In the world there's some good, convincing science, and there
are attempts at science that seem to have a lot of holes. But I think
you've got it wrong if you see any of it as belief systems. (Even
though, as we know, the line of demarcation between science and religion
throughout history has not been all that great.) Interestingly, no one
(no one sane, anyway) has ever asked me if I believe in gravity. That's
why jokes about believing in gravity are so funny. (You know, the
t-shirt "there is no gravity, the earth sucks" and that kind of thing.)

I go along with the "show me" approach, although the asker needs to be
prepared to receive a modest bibliography in response. There are a lot
of things that just can't be resolved in the course of an email
exchange. And some technologies do not have a good "... for dummies"
document that can help someone get started. But we all need to be
prepared to do our homework. Or at least spend as much time
investigating as we do reading and writing these posts!
