Here at OCLC we have actually run into the MARC record length limit for
as we create enhanced authority records for the Virtual International
Authority File (VIAF) project that collect all the different ISBNs,
titles, etc. for an author.

The solution, of course, was to use XML.

I'm guess I'm still not up to speed on the jargon. I thought the field
length problem was a result of the requirement/desire/call it what you
will, to incorporate the actual text of the work into what we
currently refer to as the MARC record.
