Forgot to point out this quote from Aaron Swartz (and Swartz *likes* libraries). I think it's relevant to what we are discussing, and sort of offers a rationale for why he is developing Open Library:
"I can search an academic library or WorldCat, but the quality of data is pretty weak — you can get basic bibliographic info, but no reviews and weak search and a painful interface..."
