Google would have to have an alphabetical index of all keywords
in the first place, which I'm not sure they have.

The "Verbundkatalog" actually does have some amount of AJAX:
if you click on an index line with an entry count of one,
you get the record displayed to the right, the index page
staying in place.  That will not be what you mean, but it
is done using an HTTP request and JavaScript.
There is, however, no reason the index couldn't be put to
work, as it is, in an asynchronous way. It would just take
bandwidth and power.
