FW: Google single search box combined with browse

Unfortunately, LC's basic search forces the user to choose a type of search
first before the search is done. What I was trying to suggest was that if
you let the user type a search into the search box and produced a list of
all headings (of all types) that match, you could save the user from having
to guess up front, for example, which index to choose for Rocky Mountains or
Bugs Bunny.

In principle, LC's http://catalog.loc.gov "Basic Search"
does already integrate dictionary browsing in subjects, names, series
titles and call numbers. It is just a bit clunky and clumsy so there's
ample room for improvement - Any reasons why it shouldn't be done and
couldn't be made more appealing as well as faster?
