Description:

In a highly-collaborative, dynamic work environment across the
organization, the Library Systems Department supports and enhances the
integrated library system (ILS) and related information systems of the
Michiana Academic Library Consortium, composed of the University of
Notre Dame, Saint Mary’s College, Holy Cross College, and Bethel
College. The department supports a variety of information systems at
both the hardware/system administration level as well as application
level. Current applications which are supported in whole or part by the
department include four products by Ex Libris, Inc.: the shared Aleph
500 ILS and SFX citation linker, Metalib federated search tool,
Digitool, a digital asset management application, and a Red Hat
Enterprise Linux cluster environment for the Libraries. Databases are
hosted with either Oracle or MySQL, depending on the application. The
department also leads and participates broadly in other technology
ventures throughout the University Libraries of Notre Dame, including
participating in several next generation search and services research
and development activities, notably with the University of Rochester's
eXtensible Catalog project (Phase II partner; project submitted for
Andrew W. Mellon Foundation funding).

This position is primarily responsible for the design, development,
implementation and support of new and existing database projects and
applications needed by Notre Dame Libraries’ staff, either for their own
work or in support of services provided to Library patrons. The
incumbent: creates applications leveraging a modular perl, MySQL, Oracle
and JasperServer environment for server-based database applications
using Web or desktop interfaces; assists and trains staff in extracting
and manipulating data acquired from various sources (Aleph 500
integrated library system, library vendors, etc.); and enhances
functionality of off-the-shelf software by creating automated scripts.
The incumbent participates in the development of a variety of special
projects throughout the Libraries, offering second-level support for
design and development of database and computer applications.

Duties:

* Provides needs analysis and assessment: to define individual or
departmental database applications, writing project proposals,
functional requirements, and application design specifications
* Project and application development: using the above outcomes, works
independently and collaboratively to develop and maintain applications,
including: organizing and leading development teams, designing
applications, writing software, performing usability testing, writing
technical documentation and user manuals, providing technical assistance
and facilitate training.

Qualifications:

* Bachelor’s degree, preferably in an IT area
* The successful candidate will have:
o Demonstrated ability to work flexibly and effectively in a
collaborative, cross-departmental environment
o effective listening skills, with excellent oral and written
communication skills
o excellent demonstrated analytical and troubleshooting skills
o a willingness to become familiar with the principles of librarianship
and scholarly communities in higher education
o proficiency with perl required and perl:DBI module experience strongly
preferred
o proficiency with SQL query analysis, building, troubleshooting and
optimization, in at least one of the following: MySQL, Oracle
o JasperServer experience is desirable but not required
o demonstrated experience with requirements analysis and gathering,
application/project development strategies and standards
o familiarity with W3C standards-compliant HTML; XML experience strongly
preferred
o demonstrated experience with Windows environment; Unix environments
experience required (Linux preferred)

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8.00 am - 5.00 pm., 12 months/40 hours.

Environment: The University of Notre Dame is a national Catholic
teaching and research university enriched with a diversified faculty,
located in Northern Indiana ninety miles from Chicago. On a highly
residential campus, approximately 8,200 undergraduates and 3,100
graduate students pursue a broad range of studies. The University
Libraries house approximately 3 million volumes within the main Hesburgh
Library and seven branch libraries and currently subscribe to nearly
17,000 serials. The Libraries have a dynamic staff of 200 including 50
librarians.
