The way it is setup currently is if you click on history, the system will do a subject search for history. If you click on philosophy, which occurs after history, it does a subject search for "history philosophy".
I am not saying this is the best method, and if you have any other ideas, please propose them!

It should show you in the search box what is being searched. As well as the narrow results should show any narrow elements that have been selected.
