POSITION: Catalog Librarian for Digital Asset Management
REPORTS TO: Head, Cataloging Department
SUMMARY: The VCU Libraries seeks an energetic, knowledgeable, and
technologically capable individual, knowledgeable of traditional
cataloging practices but also eager to create exemplary access to a
large and growing array of electronic resources. This new position
reflects the Libraries’ commitment to meet the needs of its users
through innovative and creative application of technology. It will help
guide the Cataloging Department as it evolves to meet new access
challenges in an environment of Web-resources and services, full-text
indexing, a diversity of high-profile digital assets, and multiple
metadata schema. The successful candidate will join a culturally and
academically diverse faculty of the highest caliber.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Assume leadership for defining, creating, and
coordinating appropriate descriptive and subject access to the
Libraries’ electronic resources; work cooperatively with other library
departments to research, evaluate, and interpret developments in
metadata and cataloging standards. Recommend, design, and apply
appropriate metadata schema facilitating use of VCU digital collections
within the context of the Libraries’ evolving and growing digital
repository and collections. Assist in developing and implementing
departmental policies and procedures, in training and supervising staff,
and in contributing to project management and planning cataloging and
processing workflow. Develop scripts and routines to batch load and
manipulate large sets of catalog records to heighten departmental
efficiency and create innovative solutions to problems while enhancing
the functionality of the integrated library system. The Catalog
Librarian for Digital Asset Management is expected to be active
professionally and to contribute to developments in the field. Faculty
with the VCU Libraries are evaluated and promoted on the basis of job
performance, scholarship, and professional development and service.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: ALA-accredited graduate degree.
Preferred: Minimum three years cataloging experience in an academic
library at the professional or paraprofessional level, using OCLC and an
integrated library system (preferably Ex Libris’s Aleph); demonstrated
knowledge of national cataloging standards, in particular application of
AACR2r, LCSH, and other controlled vocabularies, and MARC formats;
familiarity with current and evolving metadata standards (e.g., RDA,
EAD, TEI, METS/MODS, XML, Dublin Core), and associated technologies;
knowledge of digital asset management systems, such as DSpace and
CONTENTdm; experience with manipulating batch records in MARC or other
metadata formats (e.g., MarcEdit, perl, MARC:pm); demonstrated ability
to plan, coordinate, and implement projects in a technology rich
environment; strong interpersonal, analytical, and communication skills;
and demonstrated scholarly or research interests. Experience working in
a culturally diverse environment highly preferred.
SALARY: $38,000 minimum annually.
This is a full-time, non-tenured faculty position. Normal faculty
benefits apply, including 24 vacation days annually and choice of
