Please join the LITA/ALCTS CCS Authority Control Interest Group at ALA
Annual in Washington, D.C. for its program:
Authority Control Meets Faceted Browse
Sunday, June 24, 1:30-3:30
Renaissance Washington, D.C. Hotel, Grand Ballroom North
(999 Ninth Street NW)
What is faceting? Why is it finally breaking out of the realm of theory
and into the arena of practice and use? Where can I see it in action?
This program is intended to introduce the audience to facet theory,
showcase implementations that use faceted approaches to information
retrieval from online catalogs, and facilitate discussion on the
relationship between structured authority data and this type of
navigation.
Speakers:
Kathyrn La Barre, Assistant Professor, Graduate School of Library &
Information Science, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
One of the most prevalent approaches being utilized by those who seek to
provide updated OPAC search, browse, and display interfaces is being
called faceted classification (FC) or guided navigation. This
presentation will provide an overview of OPAC products using FC/guided
navigation. Vendor approaches to authority data will be presented in the
context of basic instruction in the nuts and bolts of facets and facet
analysis (the theoretical elements that underpin some of the most
popular OPAC interfaces being marketed today).
Charley Pennell, Principal Cataloger for Metadata, NCSU Libraries, North
Carolina State University
Forward to the past: resurrecting faceted search at NCSU Libraries.
Following on the lead of e-commerce sites like Amazon and Home Depot,
the NCSU Libraries took the leap to faceted catalog searching in January
2006 with the first library implementation of Endeca's Guided Navigation
system. We will look at the pre- and post-coordinate facets made
available through this interface, with particular attention to the
subject, author, and classification facets. Some problem and potential
solutions through use of hierarchical tables, FAST, and links to
authority browse will be discussed.
Mary Charles Lasater, Authorities Coordinator, Vanderbilt University
Vanderbilt is working with Ex Libris to use PRIMO to search two library
resources, the library catalog and a large database--The TVNEWS Archive.
Facets from the MARC and non-MARC environment will be shown. Authority
control issues will be discussed.
Casey Bisson, Information Architect, Plymouth State University
(Scriblio)
ACIG will also conduct its regular business meeting during this time
slot. The business meeting is open, and those interested in becoming
involved in the interest group are especially encouraged to attend.
Nominations will be sought and elections held for the following
positions: Vice-Chair/Chair Elect, Secretary, Member-at-Large for
Series, Member-at-Large for Names, and Member-at-Large for Subjects.
