FYI,

As Tim hasn't written about it yet, I figured I might as well break
the news here...

The Danish National Library Agency is looking into collaborating with
LibraryThing, to add 'LibraryThing for Libraries' to the National Union
Catalog

http://bibliotek.dk/?lingo=eng)

From their website: http://bibliotek.dk/help.php?help=om+bibliotek.dk

" At bibliotek.dk you will find all items that have been published in
Denmark and all items found in the stock of the Danish public & research
libraries. These items can be borrowed from the libraries. As of
September 2005, the database contains approximately 10.1 million items.
The database is updated daily."

Yup, that's ALL public and research libraries in All of denmark.

The first step on the way is to add The Union Catalog to LibraryThing.
(at present the only a few select danish libraries with z39.50 servers
are accesible in LT).

In this official newsletter From DNLA (in danish):
http://www.bs.dk/publikationer/nfn/2007/2/html/chapter11.htm it says
that they're still ironing out the details, but that it could be
operational in autumn.

This is interesting news for the Danish Library field, seeing as this is
the first (to my knowledge) commercial opening of the danish union
catalog. At present there is no public access other than the GUI at
Bibliotek.dk to the danish data. Libraries currently pay a fee to get
access to the catalog, which is hosted by dbc.dk.

The current "lock-down" has been critized by some danish Library
Bloggers (www.esbenfjord.dk <http://www.esbenfjord.dk/> among others),
who would like to see an opening of the data, to enable everyone to join
in and try to create new services, mashups, and other fun stuff.

The fact that LibraryThing managed to get hold of the data before anyone
else, does come as surprise...

- Regards,

 Bernd.
