I believe a "next generation" library catalog is not only a inventory
list of things a library owns or licenses, but also a tool for making
it easier for library users to get their primary work done.
Being a tool, this thing provides many services against the content
of the "catalog". Such services might include but are not limited to:
alert, authenticate, harvest, lend, monitor, pay, personalise,
request, reserve, etc. The following link points to a blog posting by
