Imagine that! We're on this track ourselves with Collex: http://
www.nines.org/collex
and have applied bits of that same technology to the library catalog
for Blacklight: http://aleph.lib.virginia.edu/blacklight
Given more resources and institutional support, I'm confident we'd be
able to pull off all that and more.
