I wonder... how about this for a future scenario:

Set the title page of the item (yes I'm thinking of books as a first case)
on the Surface to capture the transcribed information.  Maybe this could be
automated, but title pages aren't very consistently structured, so we might
have to interact manually here.  Select blocks of text to drop into a record
template (implying automatic OCR here to convert image to text.)  Pull up
authorized forms as other building blocks to drop into the record.  We'd
still probably need a secondary interface device (i.e., keyboard) to make
corrections or add data not found on the title page (is it more work to scan
other parts of the item, or just type in the page number, alternate titles,
etc.?)

Note this doesn't address at all what data we want to capture, or what
format the data would be stored or presented in...

Actually, dragging and dropping scanned and OCR'd transcribed information
would be mighty useful right now...
