Actually MARC does allow subfield codes beyond a-z, 0-9. LC
has never authorized them for the MARC-21 standards. The
list is iterated in this document:

<http://www.loc.gov/marc/specifications/specrecstruc.html>

under the "Variable Fields" section. Subfield codes consist
of any ASCII lowercase alphabetic, numeric character, and
the following ASCII graphic characters:

! " # $ % & ' ( ) * + , - . / : ; < = > ? { } _ ^ ` ~ [ ] \

This list of subfield codes is also reflected in the MARC-XML
schema.
