Just a small note related to "evidence", but if anyone happens to be in
Amsterdam in July, the ACM Special Interest Group on Information Retrieval
(SIGIR) will be holding its 30th conference from July 23-27 <
http://www.sigir2007.org/>. The SIGIR is home to some leading edge
research in information retrieval, and it would be great to see our
community connect more to other groups that not only research information
issues, but also are deep into the dynamics of mixing both structured and
unstructured data. There's been a tremendous amount of work done on full
text retrieval, and maybe one possibility for dealing with the
deficiencies of our metadata mechanisms is to find ways to leverage and
contribute to the digitization of the objects that the metadata describes.
But more importantly, where else will you see sessions with titles like "
Federated Text Retrieval From Uncooperative Overlapped Collections ", I
mean, that has to be worth the trip right there.
And, no, I won't be in Amsterdam then, darn it...
