It's talking about anything that hangs off the notion of "catalog",
really, like other systems (integration), embedded functionality
(features), end-users / patrons (interaction, usability, discovery),
*and* librarians (whatever *they* do :)

In the past the library world has been fantastic to come up with
reasonable standards for working together as a global team, so I'm a
bit stumped as to why we're struggling so much in the ILS area. I
personally think it's because we're so busy with other details we were
more than happy to leave that problem up to vendors and pay for it
rather than doing it ourselves. Unfortunately, those bits have become
far more important than we would ever have thought, and is now biting
our bums.

Another thing I've noticed (which may be better off on CODE4LIB) is
that a lot of us are doing things (or planning to do) service oriented
systems. Why aren't we all talking about how we can pull this off? If
we all do certain bits of a larger puzzle, I bet my boots we have
something that looks very much like an ILS, interoperability already
thrown in. it's a puzzle.
