When I read that, I was reminded of Mortimer Adler's description of how
he struggled for a very long time to figure out how to create the
"circle" of knowledge as the unifying element of the 15th edition of the
Encyclopaedia Britannica. As I recall reading about him telling it
once, he kept finding ways to create a spectrum but had difficulties
figuring out how to bend the two ends around to meet to form a circular
unity. Finally, it came to him, and the EB Propaedia is the result.
While researching this, I came across an interesting PACS-L list posting
from 1994 that mentioned DDC, LCC, and Adler's Propaedia all in the same
context:
