Assistant Head of Cataloging and Metadata Services
Rice University is seeking a dynamic, service-oriented Assistant Head
of Cataloging and Metadata Services. The successful candidate will
work in a team environment as operational manager for the Copy
Cataloging Unit (6 FTE) and assist in management and strategic
planning for the Section. The Section includes 6 exempt, 9
non-exempt, and 3 part-time temporary staff, plus student
workers. The position reports to the Head of Cataloging and Metadata
Services in the Technical Services Department.
Responsibilities: Manage the Copy Cataloging Unit, including hiring,
training, daily supervision of staff, performance planning and
evaluation, and workflow; assist with the general management of the
Section, including policy and procedure development, performance
measures, gift and bulk purchase processing, outsourcing, use of
automation, and longer-term planning and strategic development;
assist staff with more complex ordering and copy cataloging tasks;
perform some complex member copy and original cataloging; collaborate
on special projects, including metadata projects, as assigned;
represent the Section in the absence of the Section Head; serve on
standing and ad hoc committees.
Requirements: ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library Science;
successful experience as a cataloging unit manager, preferably in an
academic library; thorough knowledge of principles and standards for
cataloging and authority control; thorough knowledge of bibliographic
utilities and vendor services; thorough knowledge of integrated
library systems, preferably Sirsi; experience with digital projects
and metadata schemas and tools; demonstrated commitment to staff
development and continuing education; excellent oral and written
communication skills; proven ability to solve problems; leadership
skills, including abilities to reach consensus with diverse
constituencies and to recommend solutions in areas not under direct
supervision.
Preferred qualifications: Reading knowledge of one or more Western
European languages; familiarity or experience with the acquisitions
module in an integrated library system; familiarity or experience
with collection development principles and practices in an academic library.
Salary & benefits: $47,500 minimum, with hiring salary commensurate
with experience and qualifications; no state or local income tax; 21
benefit days; 8 study days; TIAA/CREF; health and life insurance; and
tuition waiver.
