Perhaps it would be useful to give a couple of examples or MARC granularity
from outside MARC21, which two others have referred to on this list
recently.
A statement of extent from the UKMARC manual (cf the "Goals based on the
past" section of the article by Karen Coyle and Diane Hillman)
AACR2: 1 sheet ; 48 x 30cm folded to 24 x 15cm
UKMARC 300 00 |f1|nsheet|c48 x 30cm folded to 24 x 15cm
I deduce from this that the granularity of MARC does not ultimately derive
from card catalogues. Both British and American computer catalogues were
preceded by card catalog(ue)s, yet USMARC ran the number and the unit
together in one subfield, while UKMARC separated them out. What seemed
sensible economy in one time and place seemed a needless sacrifice of
functionality at another.

The "culture of MARC" is not at all the same as the culture of MARC21.
