We've just revealed to all of our libraries the prototype of our new
Endeca-based union catalog so I thought I'd share the information with
this group too. You can play with it at http://catalog.fcla.edu

A great deal of thanks goes to NCSU for sharing the configuration files
that they developed for their Endeca-based catalog so that we could get
a jump start on our project.

The short story of what we've done so far is this:

- we extracted the MARC records from all of our 11 individual Aleph
catalogs and loaded them into a single database, deduping on OCLC number
only. From this we create the file that loads into Endeca. As of now,
we have 6,806,461 records in the database.

- we tried to keep as much unique data as possible to widen the
retrieval potential, e.g., notes and other fields (and we have more work
to do with this part of the process).

- we added the capability of querying our Aleph catalogs in real-time to
display location, holdings and circ status information rather than
loading static data into the Endeca OPAC.

- We added the NLM class range to the Narrow by Call Number... section
and are working on SuDocs.

Enjoy.
