The Princeton University Library comprises a large central library and 15
specialized libraries that are heavily used by an academic community that
includes 6,400 students and 1,100 faculty members. To support the diverse
needs of its users, the Library holds some six million printed volumes,
ranging from incunabula to current imprints, and provides access to many
other records of human knowledge, such as ancient papyri and cylinder seals,
nineteenth-century literary manuscripts, and recently produced electronic
databases and journals. The Library employs more than 300 professional and
support personnel, complemented by a large student and hourly workforce.

Description: Princeton University Library seeks an innovative
service-oriented manager to lead its Cataloging and Metadata Services
Division. The Cataloging and Metadata Services Division is comprised of 19
professional staff, 25 support staff and annually employs approximately 30
student assistants. The Voyager integrated library management system
provides core bibliographic control functions for the Library. Princeton
utilizes both RLIN and OCLC for bibliographic data harvesting and is a very
active participant in both the NACO and BIBCO programs. The Cataloging and
Metadata Services Director has overall responsibility for bibliographic
control and holdings management for the Library's collection of 6.5 million
physical item holdings and for directly managing the cataloging of
approximately 120,000 new print or equivalent electronic volumes annually.
This position is responsible for overall direction of cataloging policy and
practice within the Princeton University Library system and provides both
leadership and oversight in the application of new object control
methodologies in accord with emerging metadata standards. The Cataloging and
Metadata Services Director works closely with the heads of cataloging units
based in other departments, branches and special collections to maximize
efficient use of Voyager cataloging functionality and to increase the
quantity and quality of management data to support planning for library
information access needs. The Cataloging and Metadata Services Director
works closely and collaboratively with the Digital Library Operations
Coordinator in identifying and assigning staff resources to provide metadata
for the Library's expanding corpus of digital content and to promote user
access to the collections, both physical and digital, through the
development of innovative object control and access strategies. This
position serves as a key liaison with staff and interest groups in other
University departments, in particular the Office of Information Technology,
lending expertise in the application of standards and control for digital
content University wide. The Cataloging and Metadata Services Director works
closely and collaboratively with the Library Systems Office, with leaders of
other Technical Services functional areas and with leaders of other Library
units in planning and implementing new collections access technologies with
special responsibility for cataloging aspects of system changes. The
Cataloging and Metadata Services Director oversees the Library's
participation in BIBCO and NACO and is expected to be active in national
forums related to cataloging policy, standards and practice. He or she must
be a proactive leader in a dynamic, rapidly changing work environment
focused on the continuous improvement and expansion of bibliographic and
metadata services and must be dedicated to and capable of developing staff
to support such services. This position reports to the Associate University
Librarian for Technical Services.
Qualifications :
Required: MLS from an ALA accredited institution or equivalent combination
of education and professional experience. A minimum of five years relevant
professional experience in an academic or research library, or the
equivalent, which must include a minimum of three years of supervisory and
management experience on a scale and of a complexity sufficient to indicate
the likelihood of success in the position being advertised. Relevant
knowledge of and experience with library bibliographic control systems and
supporting technology (including OCLC and RLIN), MARC, research library
cataloging standards and a working knowledge of non-MARC metadata schemas.
Experience which demonstrates a strong service orientation and a commitment
to staff development; strong interpersonal skills; strong team work and team
building skills; strong planning, organization and problem-solving skills;
strong oral and written communication skills; and well-developed computer
skills. Participation in relevant national forums.
Preferred : Working knowledge of interfaces and data structures of
context-sensitive linking systems. Experience with non-MARC metadata
encoding, XML strongly preferred.
Compensation and Benefits: Compensation will be competitive and commensurate
with experience and accomplishments. Twenty-four (24) vacation days a year,
plus eleven (11) paid holidays. Annuity program (TIAA/CREF), group life
