Indeed; as long as we try to compete with the big guys, we will
*always* be playing catchup; there is no way ever we will have the
resources, smarts and money to do what they're doing. This is why we
need to focus on all of those things in our portfolio which we can
assume they're not interested in spending efforts on, things they
can't capitalise on.
As to *what* they're doing, I'd put money on latent semantic parsing,
cluster analysis and profiled results. (Do a few searches for the type
of people that's recently joined Google or what companies they've
recently bought :) It's going to be a fun bonfire to watch.
