Hi David and all-
The best source for info on this project architecture is:
Dalmau, Michelle, Randall Floyd, Dazhi Jiao, and Jenn Riley. "Integrating Thesaurus Relationships into Search and Browse in an Online Photograph Collection." Library Hi Tech 23, no. 3 (2005): 425-452. <http://www.emeraldinsight.com/10.1108/07378830510621829>
Actually, the first posting with this particular subject line was one where I cited this project. Thanks for giving me another opportunity to plug our work! ;-)
Jenn

The folks at the Charles W. Cushman Collection photographic collection
have done some very good work on using a thesaurus to enhance access.
They are using the structure at suggest broader terms and related terms,
present results from narrower terms as well as tie the patron's term to
an authorized term. They have published several papers, one is at:

Through Descriptive Metadata Based on Subjective Image Analysis LINDA
CANTARA, MICHELLE DALMAU, and JENN RILEY I know I've seen a newer one
but can't quickly find the citation.
