I can remember when you had to decide (and instruct the patron) on whether
your card catalog had Authors, Titles, and Subjects all in one big alphabet,
or whether you had a seperate set of cards for each.

Also, filing of the Mac and Mc's, and other rules were not all that stable
either, and had to be explained.

Like today, I think patrons may have had the _illusion_ that card catalogs
were all
the same.
