Preaching to the choir

My observation of today's posts is that we're all pretty much of one
mind about our patrons, their interface experiences, and our library
automation systems. It seems to me that we have not verbalized our
needs clearly enough to our vendors (i.e., Sirsi iBistro implementations
at two different libraries).

Is any vendor capable of emulating an Amazoogle interface with the same
underlying searches of our holdings? Do our technical services
departments or IT departments have the programming skills to create a
single-text-box entry into our ILS? If not, why not? Would an open
source product be sufficiently customizable to offer this interface?

I realize there are many questions and few answers in this post. I'm
not going to ALA so I won't be able to see what the big vendors are
introducing. Maybe they're catching on.
