Fall 1993 Accredited List Available THE FALL 1993 issue of Master's Programs in Library and Information Studies Accredited by the American Library Association is now available. Issued semiannually by the Office for Accreditation (OA), the list gives the name, address and telephone number of each school offering an ALA-accredited program; the name of the dean or director; and the name of the degree to which the program leads. Institutions offering doctoral and post-master's specialist or certificate programs are designated. Developing an Equitable and Open Information Infrastructure THIS TOPIC WILL be the focus of a conference hosted by Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility (CPSR) in Cambridge, MA, on the weekend of April 23 and 24. Topics will include: grassroots efforts in neighborhood networking; opportunities for alternative media programming in the new technology; the future of libraries as community-based information sources; changes in ownership in the media and implications for editorial control; and democratic participation through interactive technology. Conference speakers include Benjamin Barber, author of Strong Democracy: Participatory Politics for a New Age, Herbert Schiller, author of Who Knows: Information in the Age of the Fortune 500 and Tom Grundner, founder of the Free-Net movement. The Conference will be held on MIT Campus, Building 10-250. Registration fees range from $75 to $25. Ansari Best Reference Work Award THE GEOSCIENCE INFORMATION Society (GIS) is pleased to announce the creation of the GIS--Mary B. Ansari Best Reference Work Award. The award is funded by a generous gift of $5,000 from former GIS President Mary B. Ansari, Director for Branch Libraries and Library Administrative Services at the University of Nevada, Reno. The new award fund will enable the Society to present the winner of this annual award (now entering its seventh year) with a monetary award. In the words of the donor, the establishment of the fund is intended to "help lend more visibility and prestige to this important award." The award will be $500 per year and will be presented to the author or editor of the geoscience reference work selected for the award, to be divided equally in cases of multiple authors. The first GIS--Mary B. Ansari Best Reference Work Award will be presented at the 1995 annual GIS meeting, held in Seattle, Washington in October 1995. The Geoscience Information Society is an international nonprofit professional society established in 1965 to improve the exchange of geoscience information. To achieve this goal, GIS encourages interaction and cooperation among scientists, librarians, editors, cartographers, educators and information professionals. GIS is a member society of the American Geological Institute and an Associated Society of the Geological Society of America. INFORMA Announces 1994 Conference IMAGES AS INFORMATION Resources: Moving Ahead of the Curve--that will be the theme of the 1994 INFORMA conference, to be held in Point Clear (Mobile), Alabama, April 17-19, 1994. The conference will explore images as information resources and the issues and challenges they present as they are integrated into libraries' collections and services. INFORMA is a forum for users of IBM technology in libraries and is sponsored by the Academic Information Systems (ACIS) unit of IBM.
