A process of credentialing is proposed to provide more uniform levels of capability and performance by database searchers. Pros and cons of credentialing are discussed and a testing procedure is suggested utilizing a criterion-referenced test that will insure validity. An initial study of competencies to be addressed is in progress using a Delphi survey. Finding an administrative home for the credentialing process is another area where solutions are currently being sought.
