Czech Republic and Slovakia 2. Country Codes for New Republics from Yugoslavia ***************************************************************** CZECH REPUBLIC AND SLOVAKIA The Library of Congress has decided upon the headings for the two new soverign nations created from the former Czechoslovakia. The headings will be Czech Republic and Slovakia. Czech Republic is valid for the sovereign nation created January 1, 1993, and for the entity that was one of the component parts of the former Czechoslovakia for the period 1990-1992. The heading used for the component part, Czech Republic (Czechoslovakia), is no longer valid. That authority record (n 90-718759) has been revised to refer to the sovereign nation. Slovakia is valid for the sovereign nation created January 1, 1993, the independent republic 1939-1945, and the pre-1918 entity belonging to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Since the new nation is also referred to in English as the Slovak Republic and that form is a valid name heading for the component part of the former Czechoslovakia for the period 1990-1992, a reference has been added to the name authority record for Slovakia (n 50-075233) in the form Slovak Republic (1993- ). In subject cataloging work, Slovakia will also be used for the period 1990-1992. Related to the creation of these new nations, two new country codes are being added to the USMARC CODE LIST FOR COUNTRIES. The new code for the Czech Republic is xr; the new code for Slovakia is xo. The code for the former Czechoslovakia (cs) will be made obsolete. As noted in LC CATALOGING NEWSLINE, volume 1, no. 2, the new geographic area codes for the Czech Republic and Slovakia are e-xr and e-xo respectively. ***************************************************************** COUNTRY CODES FOR NEW REPUBLICS FROM YUGOSLAVIA Four new country codes have also been created for USMARC CODE LIST FOR COUNTRIES for the four newly independent nations that were part of Yugoslavia. The new code for Bosnia and Hercegovina is bn; for Croatia, ci; for Macedonia (Republic), xn; and for Slovenia, xv. The code for Yugoslavia (yu) will continue to be used for the republics of Montenegro and Serbia. ***************************************************************** ***************************************************************** LC CATALOGING NEWSLINE (ISSN 1066-8829) is published at least quarterly by the Cataloging Directorate, Collections Services, Library of Congress, and contains news of cataloging activities throughout the Library of Congress.
