Fr: Re: Interacting with Computers -- Special Issue Call for Contributions to a special issue of Interacting with Computers: Human Computer Interaction and Information Retrieval THE FOCUS: Research in the field of HCI has begun to focus on the use of distributed information systems within large work groups. This has increased interest about previous studies into 'hypertext' navigation and structuring. There has also been a renewed interest in the delays and timing problems that arise when users access distributed and shared resources. Research in IR has begun to look beyond the simplistic evaluation criteria provided by precision and recall. This has led to a renewed interest in retrieval activities and patterns of use. This special edition will look at the common problems facing HCI and IR. In particular, we welcome papers that consider: -- novel interaction techniques for information retrieval; -- the evaluation of IR systems; -- conversational modelling of information retrieval tasks; -- understanding the nature of relevance; -- networked information retrieval; -- browsing based information retrieval (inc. hypermedia); -- multimedia information retrieval. Proposals are solicited for tutorials of either a half day (3 hours plus breaks) or full day (6 hours plus breaks). Submissions should be made to the Tutorials Chair and should include a cover sheet and an extended abstract. The cover sheet should specify (1) the length of the tutorial; (2) the intended audience (introductory, intermediate, advanced); (3) complete contact information for the contact person and other presenters; and (4) brief biographies (max. 2 paragraphs) of the presenters. The extended abstract should be 3 to 5 pages, and should include an outline of the tutorial, along with descriptions of the course objectives and course materials. PANELS: Proposals for panel sessions should be sent to the Panels Chair by prospective moderators. Panels should address issues of interest to the general information retrieval community, and should be designed to stimulate lively debate between panelists and audience. Panel proposals (2-3 pages) must include: (1) complete contact information for the moderator; (2) the rationale for addressing this topic as a panel; (3) the names and affiliations of the panel members; and (4) a description of how the panel will be structured, with emphasis on how general participation will be encouraged. DEMONSTRATIONS: Demonstrations provide an opportunity for first-hand experience with information retrieval systems, whether advanced operational systems or research prototypes. The proposal should indicate how the demonstration will illustrate new ideas, and should describe the technical specifications of the system. POSTERS: SIGIR '97 poster presentations offer researchers an opportunity to present late-breaking results, significant work in progress, or research that is best communicated in an interactive or graphical format. Abstracts of posters will appear in the conference proceedings, and there will be a Best Poster Award. Fr: David Hull Re: AAAI Spring Symposium - Cross Language Text and Speech Retrieval Call for Participation Cross-Language Text and Speech Retrieval AAAI Spring Symposium March 24-26, 1997 Stanford University, USA With the spread of electronic networks around the globe, there is an increasing need for language technology and information retrieval techniques which work in a multilingual domain. This symposium is designed to bring together researchers from Information Retrieval, Knowledge Organization, Computational Linguistics, Machine Translation, Speech Processing, and related fields to address the problem of constructing search and retrieval systems that can operate across languages boundaries. The goal of the symposium is to foster the development of interdisciplinary approaches to this task. Some examples of research problems which could be addressed include: o Corpus-based vs. knowledge-based approaches. o Interlingual vs. language-pair oriented approaches. o Knowledge extraction, text summarization, and automated indexing. o Exploiting multilingual knowledge structures (such as thesauri). o Using machine translation for cross-language text retrieval. o Achieving broad domain coverage. o Evaluation of multilingual retrieval systems. The symposium will begin with introductory talks to provide a shared background to all participants. This will be followed by a mixture of presentation and discussion sessions. The presentations will focus on innovative techniques and interesting practical applications. Substantial time will be allocated for commentary, questions, and discussion of the material. The discussion sessions will address important and controversial topics of timely interest to the participants. Some of the discussion sessions may be run in parallel to create smaller groups and encourage more participation in a collaborative environment. There may also be joint sessions with the symposia: Natural Language Processing and the World Wide Web and/or Intelligent Integration and Use of Text, Image, Video and Audio Corpora, if there is sufficient common interest.
