Fr: Julia Gelfand Re: NII Advocacy Project THE NII ADVOCACY PROJECT: Call for Participation/Nomination You are invited to join an Advocacy Network to speak and write on libraries and the NII; making the case for public access to the NII through libraries. In addition, you will encourage and facilitate broad education of the library profession. As a Network member you will attend a special training session for Network members in Washington, DC on December 7 and 8, 1995. At the training session, we will inform you on the issues surrounding NII development and provide a forum for discussion of ongoing Network activities. After the initial training session, the Network will meet at ALA midwinter and annual meetings and will communicate electronically throughout the year. We want network librarians to represent the diversity of types of libraries and library activities as well as a broad geographic spread. Applicants should have some knowledge and experience with information technology, interest in serving as an advocate for the role of libraries in the NII, and be willing and able to assume a leadership role as a Network member. All Network Members must: * have a valid internet email address * attend ALA's advocacy training (usually offered at ALA Midwinter) * be willing to actively participate in the Network for at least two years * be able to attend the training session in Washington, DC on December 7 and 8, 1995 * be able to represent all types of libraries as potential NII participants. This project is partially funded by the Council on Library Resources and EBSCO Information Services but does not cover participant's travel costs (airfare and per diem) for the initial training session. We are seeking some funding of travel costs by other library organizations. Accordingly, please indicate on your application whether or not your institution is willing to fund your travel costs, and also indicate those library organizations to which you belong. We do not intend to select Network Members based on their ability to pay their own travel expenses. However, it is important for us to know how much travel money we need to raise between now and the December meeting. There has been substantial interest in this project and we expect a large number of applicants for the 80-100 Network members that we can accommodate initially.
