Fr: Timothy Finin Re: U. Maryland, Baltimore County: CS Faculty Positions University of Maryland Baltimore County Computer Science Department Electrical Engineering Department The University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) invites applications for faculty positions at all levels for joint tenure-track and term appointments in the Departments of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. Of particular interest are candidates with backgrounds in database systems, INFORMATION RETRIEVAL, parallel and distributed information systems, mediated software architectures, knowledge discovery in databases, scientific visualization, virtual environments, multi-media information and communication systems, communication protocols, digital library applications, compression, enhancement, and recognition of data and images, performance evaluation of communication networks and links, processing, transmission, and storage of integrated voice, data, graphics and video. The Departments of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering consist of 25 full-time and 32 adjunct faculty, offer BS, MS, and Ph.D. degrees, and have approximately 210 graduate and 650 undergraduate students. Strong research programs exist in both departments with grant support from industry and government agencies including ARPA, AFSOR, ARL, NASA, NIST, NOAA, NSA, NSF, ONR, IBM, Unisys, Sprint, Bell Labs, and Martin Marietta Labs. Substantial opportunities exist for collaborative efforts with NASA scientists through the Center of Excellence in Space Data and Information Sciences (CESDIS) operated by Universities Space Research Association (USRA) at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, a 30 minute drive from the UMBC campus. The CESDIS mission is to build a national group of researchers interested in collaborating on research in key problem areas which affect NASA's efforts to collect, manage, store, and process massive Earth and space science data sets. The UMBC campus has 10,500 students and is attractively located in the Baltimore-Washington corridor, providing easy access to both metropolitan areas and to numerous federal agencies and industrial research centers. UMBC is joined at the graduate level with the University of Maryland at Baltimore (UMAB), resulting in the University of Maryland Graduate School Baltimore with combined research funding of over $140M. Applications will be accepted through May 1, 1995. Address application letter and CV to: CS/EE Faculty Search, Department of Computer Science, University of Maryland Baltimore County, Baltimore, MD 21228-5398. Arrange for three letters of reference to be submitted to the same address. For additional information, send e-mail to search-csee@cs.umbc.edu or access "http://www.cs.umbc.edu/". UMBC is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer. ********************************************************** III. NOTICES III.A.1. Fr: Peter Anick Re: AI Review: Special Issue ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE REVIEW: SPECIAL ISSUE ON THE USE OF AI IN INFORMATION RETRIEVAL Call for Papers Artificial Intelligence and Information Retrieval have long shared a common interest in the representation of knowledge for the purposes of classification and retrieval. AI researchers have found that the IR task provides a practical testbed for the application of knowledge-based techniques, while IR researchers have looked to developments in AI for ways to augment methods based on statistics and information science. The combination of knowledge-based and statistical paradigms is likely to play an ever increasing role in enhancing on-line information search and navigation. This special issue will highlight some of the current efforts in applying AI techniques, such as case-based reasoning, machine learning, neural nets, natural language processing, knowledge acquisition, and intelligent interfaces, to the broad range of problems encountered in on-line information retrieval, including but not limited to: * Query formulation and query expansion * Document/image representation and indexing * Information discovery and filtering * Document/query matching algorithms; ranking of search results * User interfaces and user modelling * Development and use of thesauri and other search tools * Managing and accessing distributed information sources In addition to the call for full-length papers, we request that any researchers doing work in this area submit abstracts and/or pointers to recently published works for the purpose of compiling a comprehensive survey of the current state of the art. THE MISSION OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE REVIEW: The Artificial Intelligence Review is a forum for the work of researchers and application developers from Artificial Intelligence, Cognitive Science, and related disciplines. The Review publishes state-of-the-art research and applications and critical evaluations of techniques and algorithms from these fields. The Review also presents refereed survey and tutorial articles, as well as reviews and commentary on topics from these disciplines. INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBMITTING PAPERS: Manuscripts should be no more than 30 printed pages (approximately 15,000 words) with a 12-point font and 18-point spacing, including figures and references. Papers must not have appeared in, nor be under consideration by, other journals. Include a separate page specifying the title and giving the preferred address of the contact author for correspondence (including postal address, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address). Send FOUR copies of each submission to the guest editor listed below. Papers in ascii or postscript form may be submitted electronically. For additional information, contact the guest editor.
