Fr: Ed Fox Re: Journal of Visual Communication and Image Representation CALL FOR PAPERS Journal of Visual Communication and Image Representation Special Issue on Digital Libraries Guest Editors: Su-Shing Chen, NSF Edward A. Fox, VPI&SU (Virginia Tech) In the last decade there has been an extraordinary expansion in the Internet and other global communications infrastructure. As the global information highway is maturing, users around the world will be able to get access to a variety of information services. Digital libraries will provide an important kind of information services whose use for the general public includes all aspects of our lives, work, education, and recreation. There are many challenging problems in the development of digital libraries. In this special issue, we plan to publish innovative research papers concerning the capturing, indexing, storing, search, retrieval, presentation, and delivery of multimedia (text, images, graphics, video, and audio) information for digital libraries. TOPICS OF INTEREST include the following: * Capturing and representing multimedia information - e.g., high accuracy OCR, intelligent document-image recognition, and complex multimedia information modeling. * Indexing, categorizing, and organizing multimedia information - e.g., automatic video segmentation and annotation, semantic classification of images and audio, multimedia information synchronization. * Browsing, searching, retrieving, and filtering multimedia information - e.g., distributed search, resource discovery, intelligent information access agents, and content-based retrieval. * Visualization and presentation of multimedia information - e.g., interactive presentation, visualization and HCI issues. * Control and management of large multimedia information stores - e.g., information repositories and network management issues.
