Fr: Michael Bieber Re: HICSS Call for Papers/Reviewers: Hypertext/Multimedia Call for Papers and Reviewers 27th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Science HICSS-27 Minitrack on HYPERMEDIA IN INFORMATION SYSTEMS AND ORGANIZATIONS Maui, Hawaii - January 4-7, 1994 sponsored by ACM, IEEE, PRIISM and the University of Hawaii CONFERENCE AIMS AND SCOPE: The HICSS conference provides a forum for the interchange of ideas, research results, development activities, and applications among academicians and practitioners in organizational and computer-based system sciences. We are inviting papers for the minitrack on Hypermedia in Information Systems and Organizations. MINITRACK: Hypertext is both a concept regarding "access" to information and a rapidly growing technology. Hypermedia lies at the crossroads of hypertext and multimedia. Until recently, most successful hypertext and hypermedia implementations have been "monolithic" applications designed specifically to provide a hypermedia-style interface to a particular domain. The hypermedia community is starting to produce models of hypermedia and standards for exchanging hypermedia-linked information. The next stage is to augment the myriad of today's business applications with hypermedia functionality. This should result in new ways to view a system's knowledge and processes conceptually, to navigate among items of interest and analysis stages, to enhance a system's knowledge with comments and relationships, and to target information displays to individual users and their tasks. Indeed, commercial applications are starting to incorporate hypermedia techniques. Introducing hypermedia technology into information systems brings forth a number of organizational issues. How will the organization change with enhanced access to information and the new communication channels this facilitates? How will people's work practices be affected? What kinds of telecommunication networks are needed to support the new organization? How do we evaluate a hypermedia network? In this minitrack we explore the benefits and the challenges that arise as hypermedia support for information systems and work practices grows. We encourage papers that address organizational aspects of hypertext and hypermedia, technical aspects of integration, and both. SPECIAL JOURNAL ISSUE: Selected papers from the HICSS-26 (January 1993) minitrack will appear in a special issue of the Journal of Organizational Computing. We plan a similar issue with selected papers from this minitrack. SUGGESTED TOPICS: - Organizational Impact of Hypertext/Hypermedia - Hypertext/Hypermedia as an Enabling Technology - Integration of Hypertext/Hypermedia into Information Systems - Hypertext/Hypermedia Frameworks and Architectures - Designing Networks to Support Hypertext/Hypermedia - Communicating through Hypertext/Hypermedia - Hypertext/Hypermedia as a Technique for: Accessing and Managing Knowledge Improving Training and Learning Facilitating Teamwork and Collaboration - Applications Addressing These Issues INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS: Manuscripts should be 22-26 typewritten, double-spaced pages in length. Do not send submissions that are significantly shorter or longer than this. The published version will be 10 single-spaced pages, inclusive. Papers must not have been previously presented or published, nor currently submitted for publication. Each manuscript will be subjected to a rigorous refereeing process. Manuscripts should have a separate title page that includes the title of the paper, full name(s) of its author(s), affiliations(s), complete mailing and electronic address(es), and telephone number(s). A 300-word abstract should appear on the second page along with the title of the paper. The name(s) of the author(s) should only appear on the separate title page to facilitate the blind review process. Fr: Jennifer Porro Re: News from RLG TWO NEW FILES ADDED TO RLG'S CITADEL SERVICE Unlimited searching of special files in Hispanic studies and history of science available by annual subscription MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., May 26, 1993 -- Two new files -- Hispanic American Periodicals Index and Isis History of Science Bibliography -- have been added to CitaDel, the article-citation and document-delivery service from the Research Libraries Group (RLG). HISPANIC STUDIES INDEX. Hispanic American Periodicals Index, an ongoing project of UCLA's Latin American Center, contains over 165,000 citations to articles from more than 400 scholarly social science and humanities journals published in Latin America or treating Latin American and U.S. Hispanic topics. The journals are selected and indexed by an international panel of librarians and scholars. The index is updated annually; coverage at present is 1970 to 1991. HISTORY OF SCIENCE INDEX, EXCLUSIVE TO CITADEL. Isis History of Science Bibliography, compiled by the History of Science Society, currently contains 60,000 citations to books and articles about the history of science and the influence of science on culture. It indexes more than 600 journals and is updated annually; coverage is 1976 to the present. The index is available online only through RLG's CitaDel service. The Isis index has been combined with CitaDel's History of Technology file to form a new CitaDel file called History of Science and Technology. ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTIONS, TELECOMMUNICATION OPTIONS. Currently, access to Hispanic American Periodicals Index and the other CitaDel files is available by annual subscription. For a fixed annual fee, institutions can provide faculty, students, and staff with unlimited access to the CitaDel file(s) of their choice. The History of Technology file has been available by annual subscription and on a per-search basis; the new History of Science and Technology file, which replaces the History of Technology file, will continue on these terms with no change in fees. Telecommunication options for all CitaDel files include direct dial, the Internet, SprintNet, and RLG's private X.25 network. For more information, please call the RLIN Information Center at 1-800-537-7546; email bl.ric@rlg.bitnet or bl.ric@rlg.stanford.edu (Internet). ********************************************************** III. Fr: David Lewis Re: Resources & Lists of Resources for Content-Based Text Processing Hello, As part of a tutorial I'm co-presenting (at SIGIR-93 and ACL-93, with Liz Liddy) on natural language processing for information retrieval, I would like to prepare two brief lists: 1. A list of "lists" of resources for natural language processing of text. I count electronic mailing lists, and archives of those lists, as such lists of lists when they frequently discuss language processing resources. I will also list network servers (FTP archives, Bitnet LISTSERVs, etc.) as "lists" but even better would be to be able to provide pointers to regularly maintained files on such archives. My current list is the following: Free electronic mailing lists: NL-KR IRLIST LINGUIST EMPIRICISTS CORPORA-LIST LN HUMANIST Commercial electronic mailing lists: Computists Communique Regularly Maintained Lists of Resources: /pub/catalog at anonymous FTP site clr.nmsu.edu Suggestions are welcome. This list of "lists" is intended to be a one-shot effort that will become immediately out-of-date, but will have pointed a group of people to maintained resources with a longer expected lifetime. 2. A second list of the 10 to 20 most useful, easily available, non-commercial resources for content-based processing of large (at least megabyte scale) bodies of text, and how to get them. (If it takes more than 50 words to describe how to get them, they fail on "easily available".) I want to include only resources that are robust, available at nominal cost (at least to academics), and have actually been successfully used by multiple research or application groups. Some of the ones I intend to include on the list based on personal experience are: --Treebank corpus (tagged corpus) --PC-Kimmo and Englex (morphological analyzer) --Perl (programming language) --SMART (information retrieval system) --JUMAN (Japanese morphological analyzer / segmenter) I welcome suggested additions to this list, from resource developers and particularly from resource users based on your personal experience. Please do not be offended if you are a resource developer and I do not choose to list your resource. Brevity is my goal and there will be significant omissions. I will post the resulting two lists back to all newsgroups that this query is going to, so there's no need to write me asking for copies. These two lists will be one shots that will not be maintained, and will hopefully be soon forgotten in favor of better, permanently maintained lists.
