The emphasis of this workshop will be on integration of key technologies to produce complete solutions. The role of the operating system is seen as particularly important in this respect. Papers are also welcomed on practical experiences of developing multimedia systems. The workshop is intended to bring together practitioners from a variety of areas, including communications and networks, operating systems, real-time systems, and distributed computing. It is intended that the workshop will produce an agreed position statement on the state of the art in the field, highlighting major areas requiring future research. PAPER SUBMISSIONS: Authors are requested to submit to av-workship@comp.lancs.ac.uk a 500-2000 word position paper or an extended abstract of a full paper (in raw, unformatted text) by electronic mail. The first conference on the subject was organized by the King Abdul-Aziz Public Library in Riyadh in May 1992. The purpose of this second meeting is to bring to light ways by which the Arabic language can benefit from state of the art computer technology and from the results of the latest research in the field of computational linguistics. The conference will not only serve to review the progress made to date it will also contribute to the advancement of research in the field by facilitating the exchange of information between researchers and professionals. The conference includes three main activities: 1. An exhibition, open to both the specialists and the general public, will display various computational products and projects (application software and hardware) which make use of the Arabic language. The exhibition will last one week (22-27 Jumaada II 1414, 6-11 December 1993) and will be highlighted by presentations and demonstrations scheduled in advance. 2. An advanced tutorial session on Wednesday 24 Jumaada II, 8 December 1993 will deal with "Natural Language Processing". Lecture will be given by distinguished scholars from some of the best research institutions around the world. The purpose of the session is to provide Arab specialists with a state-of-the-art presentation and review of the field. 3. A specialized two-day long Symposium (Thursday and Friday 25-26 Jumaada II, 9-10 December) focusing on "Automatic Processing of the Arabic Language" will serve to present, by specialized researchers, results of research on the application of computational techniques to problems specific to the Arabic language. Researchers are invited to submit papers of substantial, original and unpublished quality research on all aspects of computational linguistics in Arabic including, but not limited to, the following: Morpho-syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic analysis Spoken and written language generation Machine Translation Optical Character Recognition. Computational Lexicography Interfaces The official language of the conference are Arabic, English, and French. Papers should not exceed 20 typewritten double-spaced pages (2000 character per page) Deadline for submissions is June 15, 1993. The acceptance notifications will be mailed by September 15, 1993.
