Fr: Franz Schiele Re: Workshop: Intelligent Access to Information Systems November 1-2, 1990 Darmstadt, Germany First Announcement and Call for Papers W O R K S H O P INTELLIGENT ACCESS TO INFORMATION SYSTEMS ----------------------------------------- Date: 1 - 2 November 1990 Location: Darmstadt, Germany Organizers: University of Darmstadt, University of Colorado, GMD-Integrated Information & Publication Systems Institute, German Society for Computer Science (GI) Recent developments such as object-oriented databases, hypertext, multimedia documents, etc., are leading to increasingly diverse and complex electronic information stores. For the efficient use of the resulting information systems, conventional methods of information access (e.g. boolean retrieval in reference data bases, SQL inter- faces to relational data bases) are inadequate. Moreover, new applications - including, for example, access to complex knowledge banks, retrieval in software libraries for software reuse, selective access to complexly-structured documents (ODA, SGML), or content-oriented retrieval of multimedia documents - have aroused growing interest in new, more "intelligent" methods of accessing information. The challenge of providing innovative information systems and inter- faces which meet new application demands as well as the diverse needs of individual users requires interdisciplinary research efforts and co- operation in the areas of cognitive science, human-computer interaction, computational linguistics and artificial intelligence. A considerable number of knowledge-based prototypes designed to provide more intelli- gent information access are already in existence, and it is to be ex- pected that these new approaches will influence the design of commercial software products. In a joint effort, the University of Darmstadt, the University of Colorado in Boulder, the Integrated Information and Publication Systems Institute (IPSI) of the GMD, and the German Society for Computer Science (GI), are hosting a two-day workshop for the presentation and discussion of ongoing projects and current research work in this area. Contributions may be submitted in either German or English, and should be concerned with one of the following: - prototypes - theories and models - methods of evaluation; user studies. Contributions will be selected by the program committee on the basis of extended abstracts (approx. 3 pages). In addition to 30-minute presentations of reviewed papers, the workshop will also include a series of invited talks. Planned invited speakers are: Dr. H.D. Boecker (GMD-IPSI), Prof. J. Carbonell (CMU), Prof. G. Fischer (U of Colorado), Prof. W. Kintsch (U of Colorado), Prof. G. Knorz (FH Darmstadt), Prof. B. Vickery (TOME Assoc., London), Prof. W. Wahlster (U Saarbruecken). The publication of workshop contributions is planned for a later date. Deadlines --------- Submission of contributions (extended abstracts) to the workshop organizers: by 1 September 1990. (Submission by e-mail possible.) Notification of acceptance: by 20 September 1990. Fr: David Dahmer Re: Research in information retrieval Two questions: 1) Is this newsgroup active? [answer: Yes it is!] 2) If it is, I would appreciate any response from students, professors, and professionals who do RESEARCH in the area of info-retrieval. I need a base list of researchers to submit questions to. Thanks in advance! -Dave ddahmer@uceng.uc.edu ********************************************************** IRLIST Digest is distributed from the University of California, Division of Library Automation, 300 Lakeside Drive, Oakland, CA. 94612-3550.
