In early June Murray reported back to the list with this (slightly edited) message: I am pleased to report that I had many very useful replies and as suggested by Blake Ives I have tried to put together a synopsis of the results for those of you that are interested. This was actually a little tricky to do, as some gave lists of journals and many pointed at home pages which contained lists of journals. Some also pointed to research that has been published on the topic. Published research that I found particularly relevant was: --Walstrom, Kent., Hardgrave, Bill., and Wilson, Rick. (1995, March). Forums for management information systems scholars. Communications of the ACM, vol.38, no.3, 93-107. --Nord, J., and Nord, G. Daryl. (1995). MIS research: Journal status assessment and analysis. Information and Management, 29, 29-42. --Gillenson, M., and Stutz, J. (1991, December). Academic Issues in MIS: Journals and books. MIS Quarterly. pp. 447-452. There is also quite a lengthy list of other journal ratings references prepared by Gail Ridley at the University of Tasmania, which was sent to me by Carol Saunders at Florida Atlantic University. Carol is presently preparing a home page of such information for ISWorld Net. Useful URLs which were supplied by you or surfed out by me were: --http://dalal.bus.okstate.edu/isworld/journals.htm (an ISWorld Net/ InfoSys Junction page) --http://www.pitt.edu/~malhotra/ISJournal.htm (excellent) --http://www.acm.org/pubs/ --http://www.cs.utas.edu.au/research/groups/isg/journals.html (an excellent resource) --http://www.acm.org/~eli_cohen/globalis.htm (global IS education site) --http://asgard.cbi.msstate.edu/faculty/shim/ar.html Thank you to all of you that provided these links, you know who you are! From the lists and URLs I have prepared the following list of publications. They are NOT ranked. I counted the number of times they were either mentioned in e-mails or links were given to pages that contained them. I should stress that there were not enough replies to make any conclusions out of this, and this wasn't the intention of the original message anyway. This is merely a very rough guide. It is not too dissimilar from the results of the above studies. The following were highest on the list: --MIS Quarterly --ACM Transactions on Information Systems --Journal of Management Information Systems --Communications of the ACM Next were: --Information and Management --Information Systems Research --Decision Sciences --Harvard Business Review --Management Science --Sloan Management Review Thanks again to all those who contributed to this. In my case it has allowed me to review the library holdings that we have in IS and IT, and to set up bookmarks to useful URLs on the subject. This is what the list is all about! \EOA * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ANNOUNCEMENT - Working Papers from City University of Hong Kong * * Robert Davison, City U of Hong Kong * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The following working papers were recently issued by the Information Systems Dept, City University of Hong Kong and may be ordered from: Robert Davison Assoc Editor, Working Papers Series Dept of Information Systems City University of Hong Kong Tat Chee Ave Kowloon, Hong Kong Fax: +852-2788-8694 E-mail: isrobert@msmail.is.cphk.hk 96/01 Dr. Frank Gregory: Arithmetic and Reality: A Development of Popper's Ideas 96/02 Dr. June Verner; Dr. Trevor Moores; Mr. A.R. These projects often do not meet the original requirements, have an unacceptable number of defects, and may not even function properly. This course is designed to show participants how to estimate software development costs and schedules to avoid large overruns--whether the project is a few thousand dollars or tens of millions of dollars--and also how to recognize and overcome potential software development failures. The instructor is Donald S. Remer, PhD, Oliver C. Field Professor of Engineering, Harvey Mudd College of Engineering and Science. Specific course objectives include: --Understanding the advantages and disadvantages of different software development cost and schedule estimation methods --How to start and use a software development metrics program to support estimation --How to avoid common errors and pitfalls in software development estimation --Understanding the importance of new costing concepts and paradigms --Gaining insight into the software cost estimation process by presenting case studies from a broad cross section of the public and private sectors --How to manage the software development cost and schedule estimation process --Recognizing ten key factors to prevent software project failure --Dealing with emerging cost issues--rapid prototyping, concurrent development, object-oriented approaches, COTS (commercial-off-the- shelf) software, re-use driven approaches, quality considerations (ISO 9001), and reengineering --Interacting with software professionals from industry, government, and universities --Introducing rules-of-thumb and reference sources. The Internet, the World Wide Web, multimedia interfaces, and neighborhood software stores have added new dimensions to traditional issues and topics in software engineering. The International Conference on Software Engineering is changing with the discipline to encompass the new emphases and the broadened sweep of topics and concerns which confront today's software professionals and researchers. The annual International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE) is the leading forum for the exchange of ideas on all aspects of software engineering. ICSE 97 invites you to submit work to share with the ICSE community. The theme of the 1997 International Conference on Software Engineering is "Pulling Together." Pulling together denotes coordinated action of many individuals in achieving a common goal. It also describes the coming together of many different perspectives, concerns, and abilities to find a common ground and a way of achieving cooperation. Pulling together is fundamentally dynamic in nature, and is often a matter of explicit negotiation and communication. Major changes have been instituted in ICSE 97 to help the software engineering community pull together, in the full sense of that phrase. ICSE 97 includes a widened range of conference activities, a widened range of participants, and new technical areas. A broadened outlook challenges old beliefs, promotes new ideas and new synergies, and provides for a dynamic, exciting program. New or expanded conference activities include a doctoral symposium, lessons and reports from software engineering organizations, a mentor program, posters, and a commercial exhibit. A major addition to the conference is a suite of sessions and activities focusing on the interests and needs of the practicing professional. Numerous invited presentations, timely panel topics, experience reports, and an expanded tutorial program are included. As the discipline expands, papers and presentations on topics such as software engineering and the WWW, end-user involvement in software development and customization, usability testing, design for an international marketplace, and intelligent applications are encouraged. We hope that you will pull together with us, bringing new ideas, new concerns, and new goals, thus helping us to find common ground and reach new objectives. Proposals for papers, panels, tutorials and summaries of work are due by 2 August 1996. Proposals for research demostrations and the doctoral consortium are due by 1 November 1996.
