The course is also intended to improve participants' abilities to evaluate and advise existing software/ high-tech companies. Lecturers explain in detail the principles for operating successful new and growing businesses within the software industry, and provide an in-depth case study of the process of entrepreneurship as applied to this challenging business sector. Particular emphasis is placed on the Internet marketplace. Real examples from the software industry highlight and clarify the issues and processes involved. The lectures emphasize eight key themes: --Innovation in the software industry --Focus and objectives: defining and planning the business --Opportunity and timing: market and product planning --Proprietary technology and capability for successful software development --Marketing and distribution of software services and products --Leadership/team building and people management --Partnerships: strategic alliances, mergers, and acquisitions --Cash/financial management and acquisition of financing. More information is available from: http://www.informatik.uni-siegen.de/winfo/docs/MobIS96.html The workshop will follow immediately the 15th International Conference on Conceptual Modelling ER'96 (Oct 7 - Oct 10, 1996).and the International Symposium on Business Process Modelling (Oct 10, 1996). The workshop will concentrate on the topic "The Year 2000 and other aspects of time-oriented information systems". The problems that arise with using many information systems after December 31, 1999 are becoming more widely recognized in the IS community and are also attracting the attention of a broader audience. Special topics of interest for the workshop include, but are not limited to, the following: --Information management tasks for the Year 2000 conversion --Strategies for the Year 2000 problem --Methods and tools for the Year 2000 conversion --Experiences with planning, staffing and implementing Year 2000 solutions. Independent from the Year 2000 issue, the following topics of temporal IS also will be considered as relevant for the workshop: --Modelling evolution in business applications --Modelling time-oriented behavior of business information systems --Metrics for time-oriented systems --Implementing temporally oriented IS in conventional technology --Integrity issues in temporally oriented information systems --Prototype implementations of temporal database management systems --Temporal data in data warehouse- and decision support systems Papers describing experiences from a practical viewpoint are highly encouraged. Conferences (e.g., International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data), special journal and magazine issues as well as books on data mining and knowledge discovery in databases have begun to appear with a significant frequency and across a wide ranging spectrum of communities. It is hoped that this newly-founded journal will provide a unified forum for the publication of papers on the theory and practice of KDD, and to serve as a reference for both researchers and application developers from different fields focusing on unifying themes. Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery is a peer reviewed journal publishing articles on all aspects of Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD) and methods for extracting high-level representations (patterns and models) from data. The first issue is forthcoming in early 1997. The journal is to be published by Kluwer Academic Publishers. The editors are Usama M. Fayyad, Heikki Mannila, and Gregory Piatetsky-Shapiro. A call for papers, instructions for paper submissions, editorial board members and subscription information are available at the Data Mining and Knowledge Discover home page at http://www.research.microsoft.com/research/datamine/ For further information, send inquiries regarding submission logistics to: Ms. Karen Cullen Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery Editorial Office, Kluwer Academic Publishers 101 Philip Drive Norwell, MA 02061, USA Voice: (+1 617) 871-6600 Fax: (+1 617) 871-6528 E-mail: kcullen@wkap.com Editorial and content-related inquiries should be directed to the editors-in-chief at datamine@microsoft.com. \EOA * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * CALL FOR PAPERS - Impacts of Business Process Change (JMIS) * * Bill Kettinger, U of South Carolina * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The Impacts of Business Process Change on Organizational Performance A Special Section of the Journal of Management Information Systems Edited by: Varun Grover and William J. Kettinger We invite submissions to a special section of JMIS on the impacts of Business Process Change on Organizational Performance. The impetus for this section comes from the need to understand the consequences of the large number of process change initiatives undertaken over the past few years. Systematic theoretical and empirical research directed at organizational consequences will enhance our ability to provide prescriptions for management practices, application of technologies and techniques in the conduct of process change. Process change is defined broadly to include business process reengineering, process improvement, process innovation, and business network redesign where the fundamental purpose is a desired business outcome based on the transformation of a business process. We are particularly interested in longitudinal or contextual studies that evaluate the impact of process and change management practices on business outcomes such as (but no limited to) process efficiency, process effectiveness, quality of work life, customer success, organizational profitability and competitive advantage. Authors should follow the standard JMIS guidelines for preparation of the manuscript. Four copies of the paper should be received no later than August 15, 1996 to be considered for inclusion in the special issue. This has arisen because of the increasing volumes of electronically stored information being made available. Unlike information retrieval or data mining, both of which address problems associated with static document databases, filtering applies to transiently occurring information on a computer network. The basic aim of information filtering is to route through to a user those documents deemed relevant to his/her needs, possibly ranking them by estimated relevance; documents deemed not to be relevant are filtered out. Estimation of relevance is carried out by comparing a user profile - embodying knowledge of a user's ongoing interests - with incoming documents in an information stream. It may be expected that, as a user's interests change or evolve, the corresponding user profile is adjusted accordingly. The purpose of this workshop is to examine currently available practical applications of information filtering, to assess the impact of the technology, to evaluate its successes and failures and to appraise its future utility as a practical application of knowledge management. Papers are invited on any aspect of nformation filtering, but emphasis will be placed on real-world systems and approaches. A non-exhaustive list of topics is included below: --Applications of filtering --Filter system architectures --Profile / document representation --Profile / document comparison --Profile adaptation --Profile optimisation --User interfaces --User modelling --Evaluation techniques --Multimedia/hypermedia filtering Paper Submission Details: Paper Length: 5000 words maximum Submission Date: June 28, 1996 Notification of Acceptance: August 1, 1996 Final Papers Due: September 15, 1996 Demonstrations: Software demonstrations related to the workshop topics are also encouraged. These may or may not be associated with a paper being presented. Submission deadlines for software demonstrations are as for papers. Workshop participants presenting a paper will qualify for a reduced conference fee. Refer to the main conference's general information (URL below) for participation details.
