As the growth in the virtual workplace accelerates, organizations face new challenges to cope with their new organizational structure. The new challenges that organizations face include understanding the new social dynamic environment resulting in its increasing difficulty in attracting and retaining a skilled workforce and accommodating an increasingly diverse workplace. To effectively meet these challenges, organizations need to develop strategies to support what it is called "moving work to where people are, rather than people to where the work is." The Virtual Workplace provides a forum for practitioners, researchers and policy makers for exchange ideas on the adoption of the leading-edge information technologies related to the virtual workplace and the impact of these technologies on individuals, groups, organizations, societies, and nations. Chapters are invited that are drawn from a variety of disciplines discussing a range of topics on virtual corporations, virtual groups, virtual communities, and teleworking. We are interested in provocative, analytical, empirical, or case-based studies that are written to advance our understanding of the relationships among the new computer and communication information technology, people, and organizations with regard to virtual workplaces in the world. Authors are invited to submit manuscript proposal pertaining to, but are not limited to, the following topics: --Factors affecting the growth of the virtual workplace --Criteria for identifying industry, organizations, occupations, societies most suited for virtual workplace --Multi-social and cross-cultural issues concerning virtual workplaces --The economics of the virtual workplace --The impact on education and curriculum --Managing human and organizational resources in the virtual workplace environment --Work performance evaluation and career success in the virtual workplace environment --Understanding and managing virtual corporations, projects, products, and programs --The role of networks and information superhighways --Technologies that support virtual workplaces and telework --The impact on organizational communication --The impact on the quality of personal/family life and worklife --The expected and unexpected consequences of the virtual workplace --The legal and ethical issues concerning the virtual workplace Authors are invited to submit a 3-5 page proposal on any of the above suggested topics or other related to this project. Proposals should be double-spaced, printed on one side, and written in English. Proposals should be sent before May 1, 1996 deadline to the address below. Authors of accepted proposals will be instructed to submit their complete manuscripts by August 1, 1996. The book is scheduled to be published by Idea Group Publishing (Harrisburg, PA, USA) in the Spring of 1997. Earlier Participatory Design conferences have explored the historical roots of worker involvement in system design and have looked at the application and transformation of participatory design approaches as they have moved from academic to industrial settings. PDC'96, along with providing an international forum where researchers and practitioners can exchange ideas and experiences, will consider the relation between participatory design and the changing political, organizational, and economic landscape. We encourage participation of those interested in learning about participatory design, as well as those currently involved in participatory design projects (possibly under different titles). We welcome paper submissions, proposals for panels and workshops, and submissions to our "artifacts" room. PDC'96 also will sponsor a doctoral consortium. Wherever possible, we encourage participants to draw on their own experience from concrete situations. Submission deadline for papers, panels, workshops and doctoral consortium: May 3, 1996 Submission deadline for Artifacts: August 2, 1996 The full Call for Papers is available at http://www.cpsr.org/cpsr/conferences/pdc96/pdc96.html or via e-mail from pdc96@ncat.edu. \EOA * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * CALL FOR PAPERS - Multimedia Technology and Management * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * International Conference on Multimedia Technology and Management December 11-14, 1996 Hong Kong With the help of technological advancement and IT innovation, the development of multimedia technology has evolved from an experimental stage to practical applications in industry. Although multimedia research and applications are well established, its revolution has changed in such a rapid pace that yesterday's multimedia technology is obsolete/outdated. The objective of this conference is to provide a forum for the discussion and exchange of ideas on the current issues of multimedia technology and management. Academicians and practitioners in public and private sectors throughout the world are invited to participate. Papers for presentation and publication in the proceedings are welcome. Conceptual, theoretical and empirical papers, including case studies, will be considered. We also hope that this conference will help bridge the communication gap between practitioners, academicians and vendors worldwide, and advance our understanding of the latest multimedia products which are estimated to reach a total sale value of US$6.5 billion in 1995 for the Asian market alone. Conference Topics Major topics of interest include, but are not limited to: --Legal Issues --Education and Training --Hypertext/Hypermedia --Publishing --Human Factors and Interaction Systems --Information Systems --Commercial Applications --Synchronization and Image Synthesis --Case Studies --Distributed Multimedia --Telecommunications and Communication Technologies --Demonstration and Presentation --Research and Development Instructions to Contributors --Two (2) typed, double-spaced copies of your manuscript, abstract, or proposal for a symposium, tutorial, or workshop must be submitted in English by May 29, 1996. --Each submission should include a separate title page on each copy listing the title, author(s) name, affiliation, address, phone and fax numbers, e-mail address, an abstract and 3 subject areas (which may be chosen from the list of conference topics) that are most relevant to the paper, and the individual to whom correspondence should be directed. --The main body of your manuscript, abstract, or proposal should include the title but not your name. Yet the evidence suggests that risk factors are regularly underplayed, misunderstood and frequently under-assessed. The issues surrounding the organisation, as well as the resourcing and management of IT projects are often neglected because of time constraints as well as the pressures of coping with change, and handling new complex technology. With few exceptions money and resources have been repeatedly wasted and many projects have failed to live up to the often over-hyped expectations raised. Yet there are IT projects that apparently evolve painlessly due to the effective management of risk. An understanding of the factors that influence the positive and negative outcomes will lead to a wider appreciation of how to deliver successful IT projects. We are looking for thoughtful, empirical, theoretical and case study research papers which will make a significant contribution to our understanding of the practical implications of handling IT risk. Topics for consideration include --Risk assessment --Control of IT risk --Managing IT risk --Handling technical risk --Financial risk techniques for technology --Security risk in IT --Organisational risks --Outsourcing risk management --Software risk management --Risk management methodologies As we expect a number of quality submissions we are also editing a volume of collected works on IT/IS Risk management. In the 1970s and 1980s, structured techniques gained prominence as tools for developing information systems. More recently, a great deal of attention has focused on object-oriented analysis and design. Despite strong interest in emerging techniques among both practitioners and researchers, there is a paucity of empirical evidence to determine whether, and in what ways, techniques improve the process and/or product of systems analysis and design. In many cases, anecdotes and testimonials suggest strengths and weaknesses of various aspects of different techniques. However, there is a need for controlled laboratory and field studies to establish the value of alternative techniques. From a practitioner perspective, such research has the potential to help in choosing appropriate techniques for systems development projects. From an academic point of view, such research is critical if there is to be a viable theory of information systems analysis and design that can effectively explain why techniques do or do not work, or be used to develop new techniques and methods which address problems with existing ones. We solicit manuscripts describing original empirical research on systems analysis and design techniques. Selected manuscripts will appear in a forthcoming issue of Communications of the ACM. Research may test a single method or compare several methods. Non-empirical papers which simply compare methods by way of their features should not be submitted. Research may be based on any empirical research strategy, including experimentation, survey, and detailed case study. Manuscripts are limited to 4,000 words and 25 bibliographic references.
