Here are brief summaries of the results of the prototype projects -- full versions are available for downloading at the Center's web site: http://www.ctg.albany.edu Information and Technology for Economic Development (NYS GIS) Geographic information is critical for public service programs, land use planning, and for economic development in general. Since the single largest cost of geographic information systems is the creation and collection of digital spatial data, the Center for Technology in Government, the Department of Environmental Conservation, and the NYS Temporary GIS Council produced a prototype GIS spatial data clearinghouse that can be shared across the state. Available at http://www.ctg.albany.edu/gisny.html, the Clearinghouse is a repository of spatial data resources around the state. The project also established a set of policy and management recommendations for a permanent data cooperative. Adirondack Park Prototype Makes Data Accessible via Computer The Adirondack Park is a six-million acre preserve rich in natural beauty, comprised of 12 counties and 105 towns. In order to develop any of the property within the Park, a citizen or business needs an array of information about infrastructure, natural resources, wetlands, and jurisdictional rights. The Agency's prototype project at the Center for Technology in Government combines digital imaging, database, geographic information systems and work flow technologies to create an "electronic reference desk" that significantly speeds the process which serves APA's 5,000 customers. Our thoughts are very preliminary at this point, but we would be very interested in hearing from any other business schools that have tread on this ground before us. Details in any of the areas below would be appreciated: --Does your school mandate the purchase of certain PC's (laptops)? --Does the school facilitate student purchase (special financing)? --What was student reaction? --How did you roll out the plan (ie, did you require MBA's first, undergrads later?) I will gladly synthesize the responses I get and report back to INFOSYS readers. Combining its own products and services with those from external sources, virtual enterprise is developing a new organizational culture; a new way of doing business. Co-location of organizational groups is no longer important; permanent location of corporate workforce is no longer relevant. Scanning, faxing, e-mail and WWW are replacing the traditional communication modes. The backbone of the virtual enterprise is the triumvirate of communications, computers, and energy technologies. IEMC'96 addresses the management of technology in such enterprises. Areas of emphasis include but are not limited to: --Managing people, organizations and resources in the virtual enterprise --Managing virtual projects, programs and products --Managing innovation, creativity and quality --Managing technologies, including video conferencing, electronic communication, and software standardization --Managing strategic, legal, ethical, and policy issues Conference Chair: William A. The work of information scientists needs to be further professionalized and has to face the economic challanges for modern information systems. This will be a difficult task as it is shown by the revolutiuonary developments in multimedia, hypertext, visualization of user interfaces and value adding services like the Internet. The new global online services are a challenge to the traditional information service structures. These new technologies will cause dramatic changes in our society. Search, filtering, concentration and evaluation are the central problems. However, submissions are not limited to these issues. Papers are also welcome on the following topics: --basic research in information science --social and cultural consequences --viewpoint of related disciplines like Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Communication design Conference langugages are English and German. Still, it seems as if, in the beginning of the 90s, the future has been more relevant than ever to our discipline. The promises now given in the name of information technology are more spectacular even than they were in the days of machine translation, artificial intelligence, or expert systems. And, as of yet, there have been very few warnings about where we are heading. Most everyone seems to be enthusiastic about information highways, cyberspace, business process reengineering, virtual organizations, workflow management, and more. IRIS 19 will be an occasion to voice, once again, that enthusiasm, but also, perhaps, an occasion for assessments, warnings, and cool comments. There will be workshops, panels, invited lectures, exhibitions, and happenings on various future oriented aspects of information technology use, and there will, of course, be working group sessions for paper discussion. The working groups will be organized by topics, but since the IRIS seminar is an opportunity for Scandinavian researchers (and friends from the rest of the world) to share their research, these topics are meant as a source of inspiration and nothing more. There will be the following topics (working groups) for you to choose between in submitting your paper (or registration without a paper): --The future of our discipline: from information systems to information technology. Theories of information technology use. The future of our profession: from systems developer to standard application modifier. --The use of information technology in the organizations of the future. Interorganizational cooperation, virtual offices, the use of cooperative technologies. --Internet and other networks and their role in business, government, and society at large. --Process thinking. Business process reengineering and workflow management. --The future of design. New trends vs. old traditions, the role of the users, quality, efficiency, and emancipation. --The use of information technology in the developing countries. --Other (Please, suggest a category yourself). Important dates Junior participants have to submit a paper by April 1, 1996, in order to attend the seminar. Senior participants are welcome to attend without a paper, but are of course encouraged to submit. Notification of acceptance will be received by May 20, 1996, and the final version as well as registration is due June 3, 1996.
