New Internet tools are being developed for building internal (intra-organisational) Web applications. Among those are Oracle's PowerBrowser, a Web browser that includes application developments tools based on Java, Sun's network programming language. The toolset will enable developers to write Web-enabled applications that link to any corporate databases. Novell's NetWare Web Server, a series of NetWare Loadable Modules, will enable the hosting of internal and external Web servers on NetWare LANs. IBM may be bundling its Web server software with Lotus' Notes Server, thus enabling users to access and integrate internal Notes data with information downloaded from the Internet. The PC is facing a serious challenge on the desktop computing scene; its contender is the Internet. Oracle has announced terminals in the US$ 500 range for users who have limited application needs or who only want to access the Net. Users of these Internet-access terminals can download or invoke Java-based applications -- Java is a network programming language -- and discard them from memory after use, thus allowing them to perform their tasks on smaller, less expensive machines. "A jolt of Java could shake up the computing community," Computer, Nov. 1995, 81-82. OPERATING SYSTEMS -- SURVEY. Currently, 30% of respondents of a survey use NetWare 4.1, 48% OS/2, 62.8% Unix, 33.4% Windows NT, and 9.8% Windows 95. 26% plan to implement systems using NetWare 4.1, 6% OS/2, 11.8% Unix, 13.7% Windows NT, and 29.4% Windows 95. "Pearls of wisdom," Datamation, Nov. 1, 1995, 18. WEB PUBLISHING SOFTWARE. Among the programs (HTML Assistant Pro, Spider, Cyberleaf, HotMetal Pro) tested, the best HTML-conversion tool is Interleaf's Cyberleaf. Cyberleaf is an editing tool rather than an authoring tool, that is, it does not allow you to create an original document from scratch. However, it does comes with the import features and comes with a viewer, thus making it easy to monitor your progress. Cyberleaf offers document management features and is more automated that the other packages. If you're experimenting with web publishing or process a small number of documents, HotMetal Pro -- which can handle both authoring and editing processes -- might be the software for you. Because it lets you import Word, WordPerfect, and Word Pro files, you can retain your files' existing layouts. HotMetal Pro, however, does not come with a browser for viewing pages. What do schools and education systems of the future have to face in the wave of information and communication technology? What can we learn from research about ITEM? What are the cultural, organisational, managerial, and technical issues to be addressed? These are questions begging for answers from the different perspectives of researchers, educators, administrators, and school teachers and are the main issues to be addressed in ITEM96. Topics for ITEM for the schools of the future include but are not restricted to the following: --ITEM tools for organization-collaborative decision-making --Models for operational research in educational management --Decision support systems in educational management --Training and human aspects --Quality management aspects --Evaluation of school information systems --Lessons from ITEM practice --Cultural aspects of ITEM --Implementation and integration aspects of ITEM Participation at the Working Conference is only by invitation, will be limited to about 50-60 invited participants and all participants are requested to stay for the full 5 days of the conference. Intending participants may apply to attend in one of the following three modes: --Mode 1: Presenter of a full paper (maximum length 88 A4 pages, 3500 words including references) --Mode 2: Presenter of a short paper (based on practical experiences) --Mode 3: Person with special expertise and interest (a person having special expertise or interest in the stated fields may apply to attend without submitting a paper). Applications to participate must reach the Conference Secretariat by 15 February, 1996. Applicants will be notified of their acceptance by 1 May, 1996. The two first days of the CAiSE*96 conference (May 20th and 21st) have been reserved for the consortium and the other workshops. The consortium is intended to bring together PhD students within the information systems engineering field and give them the opportunity to present their research, to discuss it with other doctoral students and to get a feedback. During the Consortium, a panel consisting of at least two prominent professors within the field of Information Systems will actively participate and contribute to the discussions. The Doctoral Consortium should be in line with the CAiSE 96 themes. The general theme of CAiSE*96 is: "Software Engineering Challenges in Modern Information Systems". An indicative, but not restrictive, list of such information systems includes Open Client/Server-based IS, Digital Libraries, Interoperable IS, Global IS in the Internet, Multimedia IS, and Re-Architectured Legacy Systems. To apply for participating at the consortium, you must provide 5 copies of an abstract of your doctoral work. The abstract should: --identify clearly the research question --outline the hard problems in the field of research and the current solutions using up to 10 known references --present the preliminary ideas and state clearly the proposed approach --present the contributions of the applicant and the results of the work The abstract should not exceed four A4 pages in length including references (margins: 2 cm from all sides, single line spacing, Font: Times Roman, 10 pt). Electronic submissions are strongly encouraged (only Postscript or MS Word 2.0-7.0 format). During the consortium, a general discussion on PhD research will take place concerning its duration, its full or part-time basis, its financial support, ethics, etc. Submissions will be selected based on the topic, quality, and interest of the three-page abstract. Especially in industrialised countries with expensive but well-educated employees, products and services must be outstanding in terms of innovation, flexibility, and creativity. A prerequisite for being able to face current and future challenges is the systematic management of the knowledge assets. Studies indicate that no more than 20 percent of the knowledge available in organisations is really being used (Bilanz 1/95). What tremendous effects would it have if we could make use of 30 percent or more! Although the technology for an improved management of the key success factor "knowledge" is ready to use, we can notice that organisations are widely ignorant of its availability. Against this background, the conference has two major goals, each one being associated with a special track: --Provide Strategic Information on Knowledge Management (KM): making clear what KM is, and how KM can improve organisational structures and processes. The main focus is on invited speakers and round table discussions. --Technology Transfer: aims to bridge the gap between application experts who will actually set up KM tools in an organisation and the technology experts who are familiar with the technology underlying the KM tools. The main focus of Track 2 will be on workshops. We are looking for people with strong theoretical and practical background willing to organise a workshop on a topic relevant to the overall conference theme of knowledge management technologies. For additional information about the workshops including format, collaboration, and submission, send a request to reimer@swssai.uu.ch. Submission details Please send at once a short confirmation that you plan to submit a workshop proposal. By February 1, 1996 send: --a short description (1-2 pages) which shows the theoretical and practical aspects of your work and illustrates how it contributes to practical aspects of knowledge management and organisational change --a publication list, indicating your most relevant papers --a workshop outline (3-5 pages) which points out the area of KM technologies the workshop will deal with, indicates the expected benefits of applying the technology in an organisation and comprises a description of at least two representative, practically relevant tasks. Send the confirmation and submission to: Ulrich Reimer Rentenanstalt / Swiss Life Informatik-Forschungsgruppe Postfach CH-8022 Zuerich, Switzerland Voice: +41-1-7114061 Fax: +41-1-7115007 E-mail: reimer@swssai.uu.ch You are invited to contact the above address for any kinds of questions and for further clarifications.
