PowerPC systems can't run DOS and Windows 3.1 programs as fast as Pentium systems do; they do, however, excel at the number crunching needed for special graphic effect like morphing and animation. Here are some guidelines to help you in your purchase: 1) for DOS, Windows 3.1, Windows 95, general purpose office and personal productivity applications, you should consider Pentiums (or other x86-compatible systems); 2) for Windows NT, OS/2, and advanced office and workstation applications, your best would be a Pentium (or other x86 compatibles) or a PowerPC; and 3) for Windows NT, OS/2, and multimedia development, graphics, math and statistics, 3-D, design and engineering, and desktop publishing, PowerPCs or Pentiums (or other x86 compatibles) would be most appropriate. "Mighty morphin' PowerPCs," PC World 13 (10) Oct. 1995, 52-53. EDI ON THE INTERNET. Some organizations are using the Internet instead of value-added networks (VAN) for exchanging EDI documents. Furthermore, EDI planners hope to blend EDI with the World Wide Web (WWW) by including EDI forms in companies' online WWW catalogue. The Internet could represent a viable alternative to VANs because: 1) more organizations have an Internet connection than accounts with an EDI VAN service; 2) the Internet has an estimated 20 million users while only about 150,000 companies worldwide conduct business with EDI; 3) the Internet enables large companies with proprietary networks to reach small partners and customers; and 4) Internet access is cheaper than VANs, making EDI accessible to those small businesses who cannot afford the fees of VANs. Drawbacks to using the Internet for exchanging EDI documents include its lack of security, customer service, and reliability. In order to promote the Internet as a vehicle for doing business, a common method for sending EDI documents has been devised and steps toward the development of a tool-kit that measures Internet reliability during EDI transfers have been announced. "The Internet beckons EDI" Information Week (547) 2 Oct. 1995, 66-70. TELECOMMUTING IN THE US. By the end of this year, 9.2 million Americans will be working from home or telework centres; in the next 15 years, the number of telecommuters is expected to triple, representing 20% of the total US workforce. Although telecommuting has been touted as a means of increasing productivity and lowering overhead costs, one expert warns that remote work may lead to a "virtual dead end" of employee isolation and bureaucratic ineffectiveness. Another expert adds that telecommuting will not truly take off until desktop full-motion video-conferencing falls below US$ 500 and ISDN is readily available. "The future of telecommuting," Wired, Oct. 1995, 68. The future of the document. [Since the 1970s, futurists have touted the paperless office. A cruel joke that was. Will networked PCs get us closer this time?] / Rifkin, Glenn -- In: FORBES. ASAP, Oct. 15, 1995 p. 42-62 Should you take the reengineering risk?. [Your company is reengineering, or so it says. Is it the real thing or just the flavor of the month? Guess right, and your career could skyrocket. Guess wrong, and you could end up among the living dead.] / Ovans, Andrea -- In: DATAMATION, 41(17) Sept. 15, 1995 p. 38-44 Telecommuting: round two: voluntary no more. [Gone are the days when telecommuting was a privilege a boss granted an employee in a bind. Now companies, eager to slash costs, are the ones urging employees to telecommute, and this new trend is spawning fresh challenges.] / Laplante, Alice -- In: FORBES. ASAP, Oct. 15, 1995 p. 132-138 POWERPC vs PENTIUM. When compared to Pentium PCs, PowerPC systems running Windows NT do not offer significant advantages in terms of performances or price. The bottom line can be summarized as follow: 1) unless a software has been optimized for the PowerPC, no significant performance can be achieved using the PowerPC; most software presently on the market are optimized for the x86 platform; 2) because of Intel's aggressive pricing, the Pentium is generally less expensive than the PowerPC; and 3) although Apple's System 7.5.2 for the Power Macintosh and Windows NT have built-in emulators that will run programs not designed to support the PowerPC, they are still relatively slow. Moreover, PowerPC systems may not support the operating system you want -- they won't support Microsoft Windows 3.1 or Windows 95 at all and OS/2 support won't be available until the end of the year.
