With the end of the term/semester and beginning of Summer in the Northern Hemisphere, INFOSYS submissions slowed during the first half of May and there was not a full issue by mid-May. Then circumstances beyond my control prevented publication during the past two weeks. For this I extend my apologies. I am roaring back with two issues this week. This issue is the usual collection of announcements, conferences, and CFPs. Friday's issue will be devoted exclusively to Position Announcements. The end of the academic year in North American and Europe also means that some INFOSYS subscribers will be going on Summer holiday, shifting to a new institution, or graduating. Whatever the reason, your options for altering your INFOSYS subscription are: --UNSUBSCRIBE: to terminate your INFOSYS subscription send the following two-word message to listserv@american.edu: unsubscribe infosys. You must do this from the account from which you subscribed. If you have problems contact INFOSYS listowner Peter Weiss , he can manually delete you from the list. --SUSPEND: if you wish to suspend delivery of INFOSYS, to be resumed later, then send the following three-word message to listserv@american.edu: set infosys nomail When you are ready to resume your subscription send a "set infosys mail" command to listserv@american.edu. Peter and I will be fairly brutal about deleting subscribers based on "unable to deliver" INFOSYS issues. If you find you are not receiving INFOSYS regularly then send a "query infosys" command to listserv@american.edu and you will receive a description of your subscription status. If you are deleted inadvertently you can resubscribe by sending the following one-line message to listserv@american.edu: subscribe infosys yourfirstname yourlastname \EOA 0633* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * NEWS - From Edupage * * Dennis Viehland, Massey University * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ONLINE ACADEMIC PUBLISHING VENTURE: Three finance economists have formed a company targeted at changing the way academic information is distributed. Social Science Electronic Publishing produces an electronic journal on the Internet, allowing subscribers to browse among abstracts of academic papers and then order what interests them. "We are changing the academic landscape. People used to publish to get tenure. Now there will be less junk because they will be writing for public consumption. People have to focus on good topics," says one of the founders. (Business Week 5/8/95 p.28) TECHNOLOGY BUDGETS KEEP GROWING: A Coopers & Lybrand survey indicates that fast-growing companies spent 7.84% of revenues on computer-related investments last year, and this year, it's expected to rise to 8.68%. Only 8% of the companies surveyed anticipated their technology budgets declining, with 89% saying their expenditures would increase or remain the same. (Inc, May 95 p.148) COMPUTER ETHICS: According to a Computerworld survey of 255 information systems professionals in corporate America, 53% have made unauthorized copies of commercial software (with the typical reason being "to try it out before buying it.") Another survey finding: 39% said it was okay to copy software licensed for one machine for home or laptop use; 27% said it was okay to copy commercial software to try it out; and 16% said it was okay to download copyrighted software from a computer bulletin board. (Computerworld 5/22/95 p.1) NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCES IN NEURAL NETWORKS: A physicist at McDonnell Douglas has been taking neural networking to an extreme -- examining what happens when the network breaks down. By using a second neural network to sort through the dying gasps of its doomed sibling, he thinks he's found a kind of "creativity machine that can function more quickly and efficiently than traditional computer programs can." For instance, after feeding 30 years' worth of top 10 tunes into the network and letting them run for a few days, the network produced 11,000 songs (all of which have now been copyrighted by the physicist). Skeptics say this still doesn't mean that neural networks can emulate the creative mind. "It may be telling us something about hallucination, but creativity seems to be a long way away," says one. Efficient computational methods for analysing data effectively are required to narrow this gap. There have been a variety of computationally intelligent techniques developed, which are beginning to provide such capability. However, many questions need to be properly addressed before these techniques can be most effectively employed to perform various data analysis tasks. For example, how important is it to understand the data characteristics and to pre-process data accordingly before using the data for tasks such as classification, forecasting and decision making? With so many modern computational techniques, which one should I use for my application? How can one integrate a variety of related techniques to develop the most effective system for a given application? What is the role of domain knowledge in data analysis and what is the impact of modern visualisation techniques on data analysis? It is the propose of IDA-95 to provide an international forum for the discussion of these and other related questions. Technical Programme To encourage interaction and a broad exchange of ideas, there will be 22 discussion papers in single session meetings over the three days. Two poster sessions, and a special plenary session for summarising posters, will provide the means for presenting and discussing the remaining 30 research papers. In addition to paper presentations, a panel debate on data preprocessing is scheduled and software demonstration is being planed. Most of the routine tasks have already been thoroughly automated, in factories as well as in offices. Further improvement of organizational productivity depends on our ability to give adequate support to knowledge workers in organizations, and to make it easier to rapidly modify information systems when organizational change is wanted. This 2 1/2 days IFIP WG8.1 Working Conference concentrates on a limited set of relevant issues, as presented in submitted papers and in panel sessions. The conference location is the campus of The Norwegian Institute of Technology (NTH) at The University of Trondheim (UNIT). The attendance fee is NOK 2300 for registrations before 4th July, NOK 2900 afterwards. To effectively meet these challenges they need to develop strategies to support what Peter Drucker has called "moving work to where people are, rather than people to where the work is." Information technologies can play a key role in enabling people to work at a distance from a central, conventional office away from their employers. Individuals no longer need to commute to a conventional office; they are able to send their work along electronic highways. Work can be performed at home, at satellite work centers, at neighborhood centers, or on the road. Such developments have been variously labeled "telework," "telecommuting," "remote working," "electronic homework," "electronic cottage," "distance working," and "flexiplace." The focus of this conference is on the implications of these changes for information systems. The conference provides a forum for practitioners, researchers, and policy makers to exchange ideas on the adoption of leading-edge information technologies related to the virtual workplace and the impact of these technologies on individuals, organizations, and societies. Submissions may be in the form of one or more of the following: a completed research paper, a description of research in progress, a industry case study, or a proposal for a panel discussion or tutorial. Research papers should be original, unpublished elsewhere, in the style of MIS Quarterly, no longer than 5000 words and include an abstract. Research in progress submissions should be no longer than 2000 words in length and include a one-page abstract. Panel proposals and tutorials should include the names and affiliations of panelists who have agreed to participate and a 1-2 page summary of the topic including a description of how the panel or tutorial will be structured. Industry case studies should report applications of telework in the workplace (whether successful or not), or can address other issues related to information technology and should be no longer than 3500 words. All submissions should include a separate title page with each author's full name, affiliation, complete address, telephone, and if available, fax number and e-mail address. Where possible, correspondence with authors will be done by e-mail. All submissions should be received by October 17, 1995. Authors will be notified of acceptance by December 8, 1995.
