Married couples make up 53% of Internet users, with unmarried males comprising 28%, unmarried females 11%, and other families 8%, according to NPD Group Inc. (Investor's Business Daily 4/3/95 A4) IS THERE A COLLEGE-EDUCATED MOM IN THE HOUSE? Fifty-nine percent of households with a college-educated mother own a PC, according to the March issue of the "13 Report." In contrast, the portion of PC- equipped households where the mother has just a high school degree is 33%. (St. Petersburg Times 4/3/95 p.8) DIGITAL & ORACLE 64-BIT SYSTEM: Digital Equipment Corporation claims its new 64-bit Alphaserver 8400 and 8200 systems, combined with Oracle's database software, will run much faster than most current high-end mainframe systems. The 8400 will cost $195K; the 8200 will cost $100K. (New York Times 4/11/95 C6) ULTRA-DENSE DISKS: IBM is still setting high-tech records, this time with its recent announcement that it could cram 3 gigabits of data onto a very small hard-disk drive. The breakthrough isattributed to "exquisite engineering" rather than a brand-new technology -- researchers improved the cobalt alloy recording surface by laying it down so that it produces fine magnetic grains that behave independently. In addition, the heads used to read and write were shrunk, enabling them to deal with smaller bits. (Business Week 4/17/95 p.93) TELECOMMUTERS PRODUCE MORE, COST LESS: Thirty-seven million U.S. households now have at least one person gainfully employed at home. Of these, the 8.4 million telecommuters comprise the fastest growing segment of the home-based worker market, according to Link Resources. Jack Nilles, author of "Making Telecommuting Happen," estimates that by working at home one to two days a week, a telecommuting employee saves the company between $6,000 and $12,000 a year, due to increased productivity, reduced needs for office space, and lower turnover. (Business Week 4/17/95 p.106) POLLS FIND COMPUTERS BOTH FUN AND STRESSFUL No surprise here -- 59% of respondents to a recent Microsoft poll reported getting angry with their computers in the last 12 months. A similar percentage said their PCs made them more productive. But 41% said they thought the proliferation of computers has reduced job opportunities. Meanwhile, a Gallup poll found 78% of Germans and 57% of Britons didn't have a clue as to what the information superhighway was, while 73% of French demonstrated a basic understanding. Eighty-two percent of Americans reported that computers were fun, compared with 57% of Europeans. The advances and diversification of information technologies, together with the progressive changes in the social, economic and cultural context, raise questions from a new perspective of identity and social responsibility of computer scientists. Computer scientists recognize today that the identity and responsibilities of their profession are constantly becoming more diverse. However, this identity and the responsibilities can only be defined taking account of those exercised by other players concerned with computerization: decision makers, users, trainers, ergonomists... In the light of these changes, there is a growing consensus that training at school and university levels is still too focused upon technical education. Education and training which allow computer scientists and other professional users of IT systems to fully discharge their responsibilities raise new questions in terms of their content and pedagogical approach. Where we adopt the term "intensive research" explicitly to include qualitative, case, and interpretive methods used in the examination of a single or a small number of subjects, organizations, or information systems, we have two goals in this special issue of MIS Quarterly: First, we aim to promote intensive research by publishing empirical studies that employ qualitative, case, and/or interpretive methods, that can serve as models of how to do intensive research, and that will illustrate the criteria by which such research can be judged. Second, we aim to open up a new field of MIS research by soliciting manuscripts that, while fitting within the broad editorial policy of MISQ, also go beyond traditional concerns with the management of data and information. In particular, we are looking for manuscripts that conduct empirical inquiries into the role of information technology in how people and organizations use and manage not just data and information, but rather, all forms of knowledge, such as intellectual capital, organizational memory and learning, group knowledge, and documentbases. Such studies might have a substantive focus on information technologies that include, but are not limited to, the following: the Internet and the World Wide Web, groupware products like Lotus NOTES, digital libraries, electronic news and shopping services, systems that support scholarly collaboration, personal digital assistants and cellular communication, hypertext encyclopedias, and other forms of physical and electronic documents. Because we are encouraging manuscripts to push the boundaries of the MIS discipline and because we wish to publish EXEMPLARY studies, we have decided on a deadline for this special issue that is much longer than usual. The deadline for submitting a manuscript is March 30, 1997. The review process will begin immediately upon receipt of the manuscript. Moreover, up to a year before the deadline, authors may submit an initial draft for feedback from the senior editors. Inquiries are welcome. Contact either of the senior editors: Allen S. Lee M.
