In order to accommodate the rush next week's issue will arrive early next week. Input from subscribers about INFOSYS content is always welcome. Especially, which sections (News, Contents, Announcements, Conferences, etc) do you find to be most useful? least useful? If something isn't working for INFOSYS subscribers I will be happy to drop it. Another favour please: when responding to a position announcement, CFP, etc please mention that you saw it in INFOSYS. Thank you. Several issues ago INFOSYS published an Edupage abstract about the bankrupty of Cray Computer Corp (CCC). Thanks to The Computists Communique (laws@ai.sri.com) I discovered this gem about Seymour Cray and CCC. Recommended reading for INFOSYS subscribers. For a 15KB essay about Cray's successful life and failed business, send a "9037" subject line to more@hpcwire.tgc.com. \EOA 0590* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * NEWS - From Flash Information * * Dennis Viehland, Massey University * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * COPYING FROM THE NATIONAL INFORMATION INFRASTRUCTURE (NII): Respondents - 1600 business users - of a survey by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce ranked the types of information which could be downloaded from the NII without fees or restrictions as follow: 1) anything not copyrighted; 2) excerpts from articles or publications; 3) complete articles or publications; 4) scholarly reports or information; 5) BBS messages; 6) games, songs, movies, and other entertainment products; 7) anything they want; and 8) nothing at all. "Legal land mines cloud multimedia", Byte 20 (4) Apr. 1995, 32. IS (INFORMATION SYSTEMS) SECURITY. A survey by Ernst & Young reveals that network security and unauthorized external access are the biggest concerns of information security managers. According to the survey, the bigger the system the safer it's considered to be - MVS mainframes are considered to be most secure and desktop machines the least secure. Measures taken to ensure systems security include: 1) antivirus software (91%); 2) dial-back or secure modems (54%); 3) firewalls (45%); 4) file encryption (36%); 5) PC hardware security devices (33%); 6) telecommunications encryption (22%); and 7) message authentication coding (17%). "Top security threats" (insert), Byte 20 (4) Apr. 1995, 94. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (IT) IN EUROPE. Studies reveal that there is a wide gap between the consumers' and the business community's vision and acceptance of IT (communications, multimedia, etc.). Consumers are critical or sceptical about IT and the sense of need - for IT related products or services - is lacking among the consumer constituency. The business community, on the other hand, expects the GII (Global Information Infrastructure) and IT to benefit business in unprecedented ways. Its focus on internal (eg. e-mail) rather than external applications may, however, be impeding business growth opportunities. Lack of awareness of potential benefits and cost are cited as the main reasons for not exploiting multimedia technology. "European study finds wide gap between consumers, business", Multimedia Week 4 (11) Mar. 13, 1995, 8-9. PC PENETRATION IN G-7 (LEADERS FROM THE GROUP OF 7). PCs per 100 people in G-7 are as follow: USA 27; Canada 19; G-7 (weighted average) 17; UK 12; Germany 12; Japan 11; France 9.25; and Italy 7.72. "Tax proposed to bolster European software industry", Multimedia Week 4 (11) Mar. 13, 1995, INTERNET. The Internet seems to be the "platform" to capitalize on - whether for building new products, stategies, companies, markets, or fortunes. 90% of companies with a portfolio of $350 million and over are making the Web a strategic component of their products and services. 10 to 20 services or schemes (computer games services, digital cash service, etc.) are launched every week. By 1997, the total Internet market (software, hardware, services) is expected to reach $4.2 billion. Moreover, the Internet population grows by 10 to 15 percent every month and doubles every 53 days; by 2000, there will be as many as 100 million servers connected to the Net. The scope of the journal is to provide a focus for disseminating new results about the elicitation, representation and validation of requirements of software-intensive information systems or applications. Theoretical and applied submissions are welcome, but all submissions must explicitly address (i) the practical consequences of the ideas for the design of complex systems, and (ii) how the ideas should be evaluated by the reflective practitioner. The scope of the journal is motivated by a multi-disciplinary view that considers requirements not only in terms of software components specification but also in terms of activities for their elicitation, representation and agreement, carried out within an organisational and social context. To this end, contributions are sought from fields such as software engineering, information systems, occupational sociology, cognitive and organisational psychology, human-computer interaction, computer-supported co-operative work, linguistics, and philosophy, for work addressing specifically requirements engineering issues. Submissions are welcomed from practitioners and researchers. The conference will provide a forum to allow practitioners and theorists of systems thinking to come together and share their skills and knowledge. It will provide a networking opportunity for all those interested in the area. The keynote speaker will be Professor Robert L. Flood, Professor of Management Sciences at the University of Hull, UK. His published texts include 'Creative Problem Solving - Total Systems Intervention', 'Critical Systems Thinking - Directed Readings', 'Liberating Systems Theory' , and 'Beyond TQM'. A new text 'Solving Problem Solving' is soon to be published. The Conference will be held at Currie Hall which is a part of the University of Western Australia campus. It is adjacent to Kings Park and the Swan River and is within easy reach of the Central Business District. Single student rooms are available at Currie Hall for $38 per night. Motel accommodation is available nearby at $65 per night ($70 per night double). Major hotels are available in the city nearby and can be arranged if required. Conference fees include lunch, morning/afternoon teas and a copy of the proceedings. Fees for part-time attendance are available on request. Enlarging upon this, the 1995 conference has had its title and theme expanded. Women associated with computing and information technology in any way, research, teaching, industry or other, are invited to attend. Men interested in these issues also are cordially invited to participate. This conference will provide an invaluable (and enjoyable!) opportunity to come together to discuss issues and developments relevant to professional activities as well as the more general position of women with respect to computing and information technology. The Sunday sessions will be oriented towards women working in industries associated with computing and information technology - it should however be of interest to all conference participants. Submissions of paper abstracts and suggestions for panels and workshops are now invited. Any aspect of the conference's theme can be covered. Please note that submissions do not have to be on women's issues as such but should be of likely interest to the conference's intended audience. The following details should be noted: Papers abstract June 2, 1995 Panels abstract/members June 16, 1995 Workshop abstract/members June 16, 1995 Notice of acceptance June 23, 1995 Final version August 18, 1995 All abstracts should clearly highlight the intended content. They should be 500 to 600 words in length. Aside from the final paper version, submission via email is preferred.
