Apple and IBM are working on a computer that can run the Mac OS -- plus Windows, OS/2, and Unix; their goal is to produce a system which combines the best of a PC and a Macintosh. Moccasin, the new converged platform, is expected to be released late 1996. "Mac hybrids", Macworld, April 1995, 102-108. CLIENT-SERVER COMPUTING. Deloitte & Touche's annual study of chief information officers (CIO) reveals that 43% of applications run on an client-server architecture -- GUI front-end to systems using traditional technologies (20%); remote database access (9%); distributed functionality (10%); and distributed data and functionality (4%). Obstacles to full-scale conversion to client- server computing include lack of industry-wide standards, architectures, tools, and security limitations. "Lack of industry- wide standards still an issue with the CIO", Client-server Computing. Supplement to Computing Canada, March 1995, 4,6. DISASTER RECOVERY SURVEY. Although the use of LANs as a primary system has more than tripled over the past two years -- from 8% in 1993 to 28% in 1995, protection of LAN data has not increased at the same rate, a survey of 300 of the largest computer users in the US reveals. Back-up and off-site data storage procedures are two critical areas where LAN protection falls behind. Also, 3 in 10 of the companies with disaster recovery plans are not confident in them. Financial services companies are the best prepared to deal with computer systems disasters. "Vulnerability of mission-critical data appears to be on rise", Client-server Computing. Supplement to Computing Canada, March 1995, 7. ON-LINE SERVICES. The latest in on-line services is a hybrid combining the capabilities of CD-ROMs (audio, video, photos, sound) and connectivity to on-line information systems. By clicking on an icon when browsing the CD-ROM, the user connects to and has access to relevant information on the network. "Companies are rolling out hybrid services combining CD-ROM with on-line systems", Multimedia Week 4 (10), March 6, 1995, 1-2. TELECOMMUNICATIONS/TRAVEL CONNECTION. A report on the development of the National Information Infrastructure in the US reveals that travel is stimulated -- not reduced -- through increased use of telecommunications as the latter leads people to live further from urban centres. Furthermore, telecommuting does not provide the only telecommunications substitute for transportation. Alternatives, which need to be exploited, include broadcasting events (sports, entertainment, etc.), direct fund transfer, and online shopping and services. "Report looks 'Beyond Telecommuting' at links between travel and telecommunications", Telecommuting Review 11 (12) Dec. 1994, 9-10. This page was created in such a rush, that we haven't had time to try all of the tools, so....... reviews and descriptions of your experiences of these tools are always welcome, and we'll try to put anything relevant on the web page. Contributions of new tools, and info on non PC based stuff is also welcome. The maintainer of the page (and the man to thank for it's creation) is Simon Stobart - simon.stobart@sunderland.ac.uk - so details of anything new to him or Ian Ferguson, (cs0rfe@isis.sund.ac.uk). The paper, entitled "Computerising Corruption in Developing Countries", analyses reasons why computers and corruption - both "hot topics" in development - are rarely connected in research. It then presents a brief analysis of five cases of corruption which have involved computerisation. In cases where computerisation does affect corruption, it can reduce and eliminate only some forms. On the other hand, by altering patterns of access and control, computerisation has also introduced new forms of corruption. Such changes in power structures form an often-hidden cause for the resistance to computerisation seen in many organisations. Where present, this issue must therefore be recognised and dealt with during the process of information systems analysis and design. \EOA 0563* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * CALL FOR PAPERS - Expert Systems '95 (ES95) * * Tremaine Alvin Cornish * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Expert Systems '95 (ES95) 11-13 December 1995 Queens' College, Cambridge UK The 15th annual Conference of the British Computer Society Specialist Group on Expert Systems brings together researchers and application developers from business, industrial and academic communities to discuss issues and solutions to problems based on techniques derived from Artificial Intelligence. For the Technical Stream, contributions are invited in the form of papers of up to 5,000 words on knowledge-based systems and related areas of artificial intelligence. Papers representing original work on theoretical and applied AI relating to: constraint satisfaction; intelligent agents; knowledge engineering methods; machine learning; model-based reasoning; natural language understanding; knowledge discovery and other related areas are welcome. For the Application Stream, contributions are invited in the form of papers of up to 5,000 words presenting case studies of knowledge- based systems that address real-world problems such as: diagnosis, monitoring, scheduling and selection. Most importantly, the papers should highlight the critical elements of success and the lessons learned. Anyone intending to submit a paper should provide a short abstract, with title, stream, name, post and e-mail address, at the earliest opportunity to the Conference Secretariat. Formatting instructions for papers will be sent as soon as the title and abstract are received. Four paper copies of papers should be submitted to arrive no later than Friday 23 June 1995 to the Conference Secretariat. Tutorials: The conference committee invites proposals for tutorials to be presented on Monday 11 December.
